I recently purchased a 4g63 long block. Upon attempting to mate my manual transmission to my engine, I have discovered what seems to be a perplexing situation. I can't seem to wrap my head around how this transmission is expected to bolt to the block when the threads are on the block side and there isn't a way to insert a bolt from the transmission side. I also noticed a good deal of resistance as I was attempting to slide the transmission onto the dowel pins in the block. Are these transmissions notoriously stubborn or should they slide right in? Attached is a picture of the mounting location in question. Its late, I'm tired, and I hope I have overlooked something on the simple end of the spectrum.

The trans didnt look to be threaded but I will give that a shot. Why is the block threaded m10 and the trans threaded m8? Im still confused.

For other / future "at the time" block applications. Instead of having to cast several type blocks they just integrated the threads if they needed them.

I just had my trans out this morning, that mounting hole your refering to isnt threaded. I actually checked just to make sure I wasnt missing a bolt. Ive just got the 4 bolts from the trans side to the block and the two for the starter. Never had any problems. As for the slipping right into place issue.. If it doesnt go right in, its ok to slowly work the trans into place by tightening the bolts. Make sure though, that you dont tighten one then go to the next.. Tighten one a little then move on and do that one a little ect ect..

If you don't have the bolt going through the block into the trans in the rear of the block, i won't be surprised if your bellhousing cracks.

Its taken 3+ years of abuse and is still holding strong. Besides, whats it supposed to thread into when that hole in the trans isnt threaded???

The hole in the trans is threaded. It's an m8x1.25 thread, and is recessed in the bellhousing to allow room for the dowel pin it passes through. Part number MD706012

My bellhousing was cracked when I pulled everything out at the beginning of this project. I bet the PO didnt install that bolt either.

The threads on the block are m10, but you insert a m8x1.25 bolt through the block into the trans.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. The PO must have been confused as well and left it out. Thanks again.
