So, i bought a 94 non-turbo 5-speed eclipse gs. It had a broken CV axle which we replaced last night. The problem is now the transmissions gear oil just pours out at a steady stream. Looks like its close to the CV that we replaced, are there gaskets, or seals, or anything that was suppose to come with the CV?

If the leak is where the axle slides into the transmission housing then you probably have an old or damaged axle seal. If the fluid is pouring out it may even be missing.

A claw type hammer works good for removing the old one. Just be careful not to put any gouges in the metal where outer edge of the seal mates up to. Then you just put a bit of tranny oil around the edge of the new seal and push it into place. Push it in with even pressure so that it doesn't go in crooked. If you have a socket that is the same size as the seal you can use that to push it in. Don't put it in backwards. The metal ring should face the transmission.

Also be careful not to damage the inner part of the seal when you are putting the axle back in. Lube the inner part of the seal and/or the splines on the end of the axle.

Most auto parts stores will have or can probably get the seal for you but I personally would recommend getting an oem one from the dealer. Should only cost around $5.

If the leak is from a different area then give a better description of the location or better yet take a pic.

Good luck.

im gonna get under the car in a few minutes{its still around 40 degrees...and i dont have a garage LOL...} and see if i cant get a good look at where it might be coming from. Upon further reading of the repair manual i just bought, i believe it might be a "driveaxle seal".

could the fact the CV axle was snapped in two pieces and still drove have destroyed this seal? as far as i know, thats the only thing that was wrong with the car. The axle was broke completely in half where the splined edge fits into the transmission part.

Absolutely. That seal must be trashed.

the problem was the seal. It literally fell to pieces as we tried to remove the old one. 8 dollars later, no leaks at all. problem solved...with a new lowering kit installed in the meantime...LOL
