yesterday, I replaced the manual transaxle, manual transmission and rear differential fluid with a mixture of 70% amsoil 75W-90W and 30% lucas oil stabilizer. The difference in the shifting smoothness is substantial, it is defintely worth doing if you have 2nd gear grind and trouble getting into first gear.

some hints for the task:

If you are mixing oils with stabilizers do it before you put it in a seperate container (I just emptied out a little oil from the amsoil bottle and added the stabilizer) After you jack up the car make sure to loosen and remove the filler plugs first (this way if it wont come off, you'll know this first before you drain your fluid and by having an air hole in your system the fluid will drain faster/easier when you remove the drain plug).

to fill:
you have to get either a oil filler pump or a hose that is at least 4 ft long attached to a funnel. (I used the funnel method by attaching one of those clear plastic hoses to the end of a black plastic funnel extender from autozone). When filling, place your oil pan under the filler plug and fill to the point of the base of the plug (the easiest way to do this is to just fill till it starts dripping into the oil pan.

the bolt sizes for the transmission are 17mm for the filler plug and 15/16s (in) for the drain plug (you'll need a socket and rachet). the manual transaxle has the same filler plug drain plug sizes, and the rear differential has both filler and drain plug at 15/16s. (this is for a g1)

I used approx. 3 1/2 quarts of oil and the stabilizer for the job (there was overspill from filling and accidently spilled one of the bottles while climbing under the car. )

when you have all the oil collected remember to take it to autozone and they'll recycle it for free.

happy dsming. :dsm:

Actually the drain plugs are 23/24mm (I can't remember which off the top of my head), and you're right about the filler plugs being 17mm.

You're also supposed to torque those bolts down to 24ft*lbs (NA 1g is 20, if I remember right ...) when you're done.

But I had to jerry-rig a long enough tube to reach the transfer case out of an extra coolant resevoir cap (it had all three hoses, so I cleaned them all out and combined the three into one big hose ;)) and connected that to my clear funnel that was only a foot long.

I'm seriously considering draining the fluid again and putting Penzzoil Syncromesh into it, since I will admit that I bought the cheap stuff (Coastal 85W-90 Gear Lube), because I was low on cash :(.

I just need to get 1 more quart of amsoil and that's what I'm going to try also, it just sucks I can only get it from amsoils website. There are no dealers in Arizona.

So I guess it is a bi*** to get the tranny fluid in?

I need to get it done one of these days. :|

I did my transmission fluid when i put my new intake pipe and filter on, then again after i put in a new engine. Its kinda burried deep in there, and the cap is hard to get off if its never been changed. Transfercase isnt too bad, i had to jack the car up and run like a 3ft long tube to it from the funnel.

Its very much in my opinion worth it, regardless if its redline, sycromesh/shift it really effects the performance of your shifting for the better.

heh heh, hey all. :D

well. . .

I didn't use syncromesh, because I got a deal on amsoil and I've heard (and felt) that amsoil had superior properties as an engine oil so I thought I'd give it a try as a gear oil. I have no proof of whether or not if performs better. The stabilizer I added because my transmission was in particularly bad shape: it would grind on practically all gears (not being an allignment issue) and I read someone's post about it that convinced me enough to research it online. www.lucasoil.com I didn't use their transmission oil because it said it was for light duty vehicles.

here's a related trans oil post: http://www.dsmtuner.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124143

the only problem I had was getting the transmission filler plug off, it took a rachet and rachet extender and a friend mechanic with more weight (he called it muscle) to get the nut off. thanks bob. It was the easiest to fill. I'd give yourself a couple hours if you've never done it before, but really it should only take like 20 minutes with all the right tools.

I did all of the fluids at the same time because it was so easy to do one and then start another. I'd recommend this.

I had a problem getting that off too, especially when you have to lay down when taking it off, it's hard to apply a good amount of force on the breaker bar. So I let my friend Mr. Sledgehammer hit the breaker bar for me. That thing loosened up real easily with that ;). That also worked very well for the transfercase.
