I changed my oil today and noticed some fluid just kind of sitting there under there is that my transaxle? I took a picture might be hard to see. I took the off the screw that's labelled oil while I had the car up for the oil change and nothing came out does that mean I've lost all my fluid?

Is this a common leak? whats the first thing to check?

Thanks in advance!

easiest method is to refill it, clean the area with isopropyl alcohol or degreaser and inspect where the leak is actually coming from.

Thanks for the info...

Did I even refer to this correct? Is this where the transaxle fluid goes? Or is this the Transfer Case? There is another thing to the left of this that also has a drain and oil fill cap.

Sorry to be so green but this is about the most I've worked on a car... but I definitely want to learn. Could someone verify what that is that I'm referring to in the picture and what type of fluid I am supposed to fill with. If I had to guess I would say that is the transfer case... but I want to know 100% and I was planning on using Royal Purple Syncromax or do I use Max-Gear are there different weights as in motor oil?

Again, Sorry but I'm a newb and I want to get this right.

you are correct, that is your transfer case. your owners manual should tell you what to fill your t-case with. if not search on here a little and you should be able to find an answer. but royal purple is the best way to go IMO:thumb:

yeah thats definately your transfer case and you should clean it up look where the leaks are coming from...
Also if its from a bolt put teflon tape and torque it to specification
recommend you to buy a repair manual for your car as it comes in very handy...

this is incorrect. you do not use Teflon tape on this bolt, Teflon tape will actually prevent it from creating a proper seal. the bolt head makes contact with the transfer case and this creates the seal because it meets its mating flat surface, and with proper torque it should seal, having Teflon tape will prevent the bolt head from reaching properly thus creating a poor seal.

different bolts/ threads have different ways of creating a seal, you should look this up, im not about to make this thread a tech article on bolts, threads and seals:banghead:

Stupid question...

I've decided to go with Royal Purple for my gear oils. But I don't know if I am supposed to use the SYNCHROMAX in both the transaxle and the transfer case, then use their Gear Oil 75-90 for the rear differential, or am I supposed to only use the SYNCHROMAX in the tranny and use the gear oil for the transfer and rear differential.

Sorry for so many questions. I did search and haven't been able to find a definitive answer on this.

Update: After more searching and reading this thread: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/243881-manual-transmission-fluid-rear-differential-fluid-transfer-case.html it seems evident that the reason I can't find a definitive answer is because there simply isn't one and everyone has their own opinion or preferred taste.

I'm going to go with RP Synchromax in the tranny and RP 75-90 Gear Oil in the transfer and Rear Diff. and see what happens.
