Rebuilt the motor in a 92 awd talon. After putting the car back together, it started up. Filled the auto trans up and, it will not go into gear, any gear and move on its own. Assuming that it was put back in correctly, is there any procedure that may have been overlooked to refill the transmission?

Currently, we have been putting fluid in and let warm up. After putting in more fluid, the level is not changing and the car was running for over 30 minutes and still, will not go into gear.

Any information would be useful. So far, about 2 to 3 quarts have been put in. We do not know how much was lost during the time the trans was out of the car. Is it possible that it was more than this amount? It did not seem to be more than this amount but, guess it could be. Going to buy more fluid.

Lastly, yes, the trans was working fine before the engine tear-down. No burnt fluid or anything of that nature.

These transmissions take around 7qts, give or take. Was the trans drained beforehand?

it was not drained. We are thinking it may still be low. The last bit we added did not change the level though. When everything was at temp, it was at the hot mark on the stick. Is it filling the converter? new to auto but not to DSMs.[DOUBLEPOST=1418235799][/DOUBLEPOST]it was not drained. We are thinking it may still be low. it could be. that converter can hold a considerable amount of fluid. Also, unlike an engine, the trans can't really burn atf, so fluid can't just "disappear."

Most automatic transmissions, or at least all the ones I've ever dealt with(mostly GMs) hold about ~12 qts, its probably still low. If its not a matter of being low on fluid, I would check the cable and gear selector are in good order and try moving the selector on the trans manually(if these cars have that setup, not sure if they do or not) If its all electronic for gear selection I would double check that a connector isn't unplugged somewhere.

We looked for any disconnected wires, checked the selector and still, will not go into any gear. We are thinking that the trans is missing something during reassembly. Any common parts left out that we need to know about. The car was apart for a few months and may have misplaced a vital part.... not sure as I have not messed with autos and do not really like them for this reason but, got the car for my daughter as she is having a tough time with a manual and, was in decent shape.

Take one of the trans cooler lines off make sure its pumping fluid still...you may have blown the pump...

We did not take the trans apart, just the motor. The only fluid that came out was while taking the motor out. After we put everything back together, we put some fluid in and just added about 2 quarts tops to the trans while in neutral after warming up. Is there something that should have been done before starting? I am in FL at the moment and will be home tomorrow afternoon. I will unhook the cooler line and see if it is pumping.... if it is, any other possibilities? I am thinking about taking it to a shop (if anyone knows of a good one in the west Atlanta area.... I live in carrollton) We tried moving the shifter, on top of the trans. I will double check the wires and make sure they are all plugged in but, not much to mess up there, really. Anything else, anyone can think of, that may be the issue???

Did you guys remove the transmission from the motor? If so the TC may not have seated the whole way in the pump. I see it all the time doing tans. If the TC wasnt seated correctly in the trans it take out the gears inside.

We are going to take the motor and trans back out and see if that is the issue. I believe it may be but, the person helping with the car was pretty sure he put the TC on all the way. We have another project at the moment so, will take about a month or so before we can get to the talon again. Thanks for the input.

One other question, if it is just the TC not on correctly, did it hurt anything? If the pump is still pumping, did the transmission get 'hurt' by not putting the converter on all the way?

If the TC wasn't seated in the pump right it will take out the bearings and/or the gears inside the pump, causing it not to pump fluid. If it is pumping take a small sample of what comes out and look at it see if the fluid looks shiny.
