My transfer case is now leaking. the car has had the recall done when the last owner owned the car. when i fill the case it will leave a 3" spot on the drive way. Is there a quick fix or should i just rebuild the transfer case.

The "recall" consists of the dealor inspecting / filling the X-fer case with fluid or actually replacing the front yoke assembly at their discresion.

If the yoke seal is bad (again) or was never replaced, you can try and get the dealor to replace it under this recall. Persistance is often needed and usually does pay off, but may take you several weeks to get it done

Or, you can shell out the $35 + shipping to get the yoke assembly from JNZ Tuning (what I did) and do the work yourself :thumb:

i do not even see that part offerd there. then i would have to replace the U-joints too

from what i can see in my manual for the car i need a "transfer case driveshaft seal"

this would make sence because this did start to leak bad after i did a clutch in the car and took down the drive shaft.

Yes, the "recall kit" comes with the yoke and front DS u-joint preinstalled. I'll bet you a nickle that if your front u-joint is original it is bad. Grab the yoke and move it in the full 360* range. If it is not 100% spooth, then should be replaced.

That seal is the press-in seal that goes into the x-fer case itself. It's definitely possible that it is leaking (I'd replace it in any case), but the common sorce of leaks is the copper seal in the back of the yoke itself which is what the recall kit will fix.

The cause of the problem that promted the recall is the plug in the yoke itself not the x-fer case seal. There is a "freeze plug" pressed in the center of the yoke to plug a hole needed for machining the splines in the yoke. It leaks. Even if you get a new one it may leak again.

Take the yoke out and clean the inside with brake cleaner and blow it dry. Use a long tip and run a bead of silicone around the plug and allow it to dry thoroughly. Reinstall it and you should be good to go.

BTW, be sure the puddle you see isn't the power steering rack. It leaks like an sob too, and sometimes looks like an x-fer case leak.

this is the trans case. i will take it down and fill the center with defcon but i am going to be really upset if it still leaks. maybe i will do both the car does have 200,000+ miles on it. the reason i don't think it is the brass seal alone is because it started to leak after i had the drive shaft out to do the clutch. so i think the seal is just not "happy" but it is good to hear from people and there ideas on how to fix this pain in the ass problem before i go tare into the car again.
