tranny wont go.....

I have a 98 gsx and recently one of the 2 big bolts (located inside the transmission) came loose and cracked my tranny cover. So i ordered a new one and tightened up the 2 bolts to 110 foot pounds of torque and put the tranny cover back on. Now the car will not move I can put it into any gear but the car will not move, it will just stall out.. Any sugestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you mean the two 36mm lock nuts (not bolts) that hold the input and intermediate shafts. Did you hold the shafts completely rigid (no play) by putting it in 2 gears at once when you torqued them? Did you stake them? Did you turn the input shaft in all gears BEFORE you put the tranny back in? Did you take the time to do the preload spacer (shim) measurements as per manual?

Perhaps a 2g manual, i learned all my steps from that when i first began.

Assuming the problem is in the tranny and not elsewhere, you're going to have to pull the tranny. Then if you can't turn the input shaft smoothly by hand in any gear, the problem is definately in the tranny. Check to make sure the 36mm nuts have not come loose. If they have, you may get lucky and just retighten and stake them (replace if they are damaged in any way). But make sure you can turn the input shaft in the gears when you're done. If you can't, the engine won't either. If you then want to risk nothing else inside the tranny is bad, you're done.

However since you did all the work of removing the tranny, I'd open it up to look for any other damage or even rebuild it. You don't want to have to do it again. Look for worn shift forks, syncros, bearings, broken pieces. Lastly and what nearly all local tranny shops will not do (because of the time and effort involved) is check and adjust bearing preloads and end play per manual. This will make it shift like butter if done correctly. If not correct, shifting will be sloppy and if really off can even lock up the shafts (input shaft won't turn by hand when the case is back together). Tranny overhaul is not trival. If you're uncomfortable, have a reliable professional do it. If you do it, follow the rebuild VFAQ exactly step by step. In fact read it first so you know what you're getting into.
