yep 5th and reverse are directly connected. theres a slider ring, pops through the other. the teeth on this are very sharp and once they start to get really used they loose sharpness. when the teeth get rounded the slider wont pop though no more. i had this exact problem on my tranny once. took whole entire tranny off just like you. unbolted the 5th gear cluster housing with a friend and found the problem right away. my best friend that helped my is a dsm expert the guy is like a automotive scientist. he later teased me for takin the tranny all the way off of the car cause this problem can be fixed when tranny is on car. id find somebody that has a tranny lying around that has a blown center diff. theres lots a peeps out there that blow center diff and just buy a new junk yard tranny. if you can find somebody that has a semi broken tranny i bet you could score the fith reverse set up out of it for your tranny. thats what i did. good luck man.
