Hey Guys,

I've been to three different dealerships, including one chrysler(they told me at the mitsu dealership to go get parts from chrysler since its a chrysler motor and transmission????) and i can't figure out what tranny fluid to put in my car. They all told me different things. So my question is what type of fluid does everyone use? And why I be safe putting in Royal Purple High Performance Manual Transmission Fluid?

Its a 2.0L
FWD
Manual
99 Mitsu Eclipse

Thanks,
Ilia

Yep your engine and trans are dodge if ya doubt me pop the hood on an Avenger.

As for trans fluid Id say just go with some Penzoil Syncromesh, its shock resistant, doesnt foam, and its nice and slick. Royal Purple is crap imo, some may like it but there are alot more of us who dont.

I just dont want to end up replacing my tranny because I put wrong fluids in there. And I also dont really want to go to the dealership because I think that they are just using some regular fluid and calling it "special", plus I would like to try something better that what the dealer would put in our cars.

If someone would suggest a safe choice to go with I would be very greatfull.
Thanks,
Ilia

No! No! No! please DO NOT use Penzoil, Royal Purple, or any other aftermarket fluid on the N/t model. Go to your chrysler/dodge dealership and ask specifically for NVT-350 transmission fluid. Those other fluids will ruin your trans...

Hmm...here's the problem though. I called my local chrysler/dodge dealership and I explained them my situation. They asked for my vin number and ran it on their computer or whatever and they told me that the entire car( engine and tranny ) was made by mitsu. At that point they told me to go to a mitsubishi dealership and ask them what to do. I've been running in circles from mitsu dealership to chrysler/dodge and everything in between and everyone seems to live in their own different world and not knowing anything about the products that come off their lines.

I'm just really frustrated at this point and I'm really not sure if I can even TRUST the damn dealerships anymore!

Thanks for all your help,
Ilia

^^^ exactly... You don't need to ask them what SHOULD I use tell them what you NEED. It is true your car is manufactured by mitsu(obviously) but your engine and trans is made by chrysler. the part number above is correct as I just bought some fluid last week from chrysler. When you pick it up it looks like this

If those 'other' fluids are so bad for the NT trans, then how is it that I was able to roll more than 250k miles on mine and it is still going strong?

FWIW, I have two high mileage NT Eclipse cars but have never shelled out for the 'special' NVT-350 fluid... I have been using the Castrol stuff with NO adverse effects at all in either transmission. :thumb:

You don't have a NVT350 transmission since you have a 1G N/T and not a 2G N/T, at least going by your profile.

You are right. I have 2 of the 1G NT's. (love these cars) :thumb:
Now, Could you please help a DSM'er out and point me to a link that explains how the 'other fluids' will ruin a transmission?
When I searched on this topic I found a different recommendation in nearly every thread, but I could not find any posts where someone said our DSM's require this one specific type of fluid...

Sorry if I am ignorant about this, Could you help me out and educate me? :dsm:
