Tranny Fluid Change??? yes or no?

I was checkin out the wifes car, gettin ready to do a head gasket, and various other things. I checked the Tranny fluid (its an auto) And its just about BLACK!
Seeing how it has almost 110k on it now, should I get this fluid changed? I have heard the horror stories of people gettin it changed and the Tranny Dying shortly after.

I have a friend who worked at a transmission shop for many years, he always says that if the transmission is shifting belts without slipping, then leave it alone.
