So I was cleaning the GSX and it stopped moving when in gear. Only way to make it move is to rev the engine high and it jumps into gear. Automatic and I start hearing a funny sound. Shut it down and notice that all the coolant was gone...hmmm...started the car and filled the radiator...check the oil - grey....AAARRRGGGHHH...could it be the obvious blown headgasket or something more serious? After this I got GSX depressed and cleaned the heck out of it...now it looks nice but man...whats the average on this repair or should i just do it myself for student/teaching purposes from this forum?? At least after cleaning it I found out that the return line was leaking oil... :) least something positive came out of it... ;)

Low coolant and grey oil would indicate that you likely have coolant in the oil. It is usually more of a tanish brown color though. Take a picture of the oil that is in it and post it up.

I would tackle the task your self. It is very simple. Just make sure you buy new head studs if you dont have arps, andyour arps havent been torqued more than a couple times.

If your not sure youll remember where a bolt goes, put it back after you remove the part, if possible. Main thing youll need is a torque wrench a vise and a small drill bit or allen wrench to use as a grenade pin for your timing belt tensioner. Line up your marks, rotate the crank a few times to make sure nothing hits. Dont forget to pull it out before you put everything together. Ask me how I know...

I am truly confused as to what you are saying, you were cleaning the gsx and while you were cleaning it, it stopped moving?

And as far as I can deceipher your head gasket is shot...

Well a head gasket job isnt that difficult just have to follow some steps, and procedures did my first one when i had not idea about my dsm.

Grey usually means lots of fine metal, a milky coffee color is what coolant and oil look like.

Good luck man, that's some tough luck.

was going to pull both pans today but the GODS wanted rain in the area for a couple of hours....once i pull both pans, i will update the forum with my investigative findings...sounds sweet running BUT i know there is something wrong with the engine....ugh...she on jack stands looking like a broken down car from the past century...hopefully in a couple of months i will have this machine humming and zipping around the streets like a new vehicle...

Does all the GSXs come with the 4G63 engine? if not where can i find out where the engine model number is located?

yes all gsx come 4g63, engine code is on the front right aide of the block by the water pipe

1 - ok....i did what the mechanics at the shop told me what to do...added some tranny fluid and still same issue with the transmission...slips...have to build pressure to get it into gear...so something is still wrong with it...

2 - when running the engine today...the ultimate happened....number 3 cylinder started leaking the greyish color....A HA!!!!! caught u in the act...also the belt from the alternator was split on the inside due to the pulley being warped....hmm....
....
WHAT ELSE CAN GO WRONG....ugh....does anybody want a 98 GSX....its getting to that point on me...this car is worst than my 1954 classic truck....is this the usual you find with these cars?
