Okay guys I want to trade my eclipse gst 1997(132k mi) for a 1990(111k mi) eclipse gsx. Problem is the dude that is trading me only has 1 set of keys. I have 2 sets. He does not have a pink slip. I do. He say he has a bill of sale but is not under his name its from previous seller. I ask him to go to the DMV with me and he say he didnt register under his name yet, so he told me to write my name in and register it at DMV under my name. Both of us will be at the DMV trading cars for cars. Do you guys think this is fishy or not?

Thanks for reply

way fishy..

go with your gut instinct.

that's the best way to do it.

Tell him to get it title under his name first, before you trade him. I don't know how things work in California, but a bill of sale doesn't mean shit with out a title.

A lot of people don't want to put the title in their name if they know they're going to get rid of the car because if they do, then they have to pay taxes on it.

Call a lawyer or maybe have a cop-friend look up the previous owner's info, then get in contact with them to make sure the car isn't stolen. But I know that I've sold car's without getting the title registered in my name before, but what you mean by "bill of sale" I don't really understand...

you know what i am just gonna keep my gst its running good - actually great i just gonna save money and buy a cheap 1g awd turbo and rebuild the engine for fun and experience learning in and out from the car that is probably the reason why most dsmer owns these vehicles is to learn it in and out.

I don't know why I love the 1g body so much everytime I see one in the street I will be like waving my hand crazy and say Sup Big 1g Bro. =P kinda dorky but one of these day I will own a 1g awd dsm

get the title. cause say its stolen, they will reclaim it and your out whatever you had into the deal

Title is a good thing, although they do become lost. Do a CARFAX on it, if it is stolen it will be on there. Here in NH, 1995 and older do not need titles to register, only a bill of sale and a previous registration.

don't do it. this is a little unrelated but when i was younger i went to sell my mr2 to this kid i know and at the title place i wanted to put a lien on the title because he was only giving me $500 at first. they wouldn't let me put a lien on it for some stupid reason so i just gave him the title. needless to say it's like 6 years later and i'm out $1,500 and if i ever see the mofo again he will most likely be dead.

The only way to get title is for the last owner (the one who's name is on the title) to go to the dmv or currency exchange and apply for lost title, then wait 2 months to get it in.

thats why i am a little aware and curious why didnt the guy reapply for a pink slip ### the car been on craig for nearly or almost 2 months

I would just check to see if the car isn't stole or anything just to make sure everything checks out ok and if it does then do it. Just because its not under his name doesn't mean its stolen i mean it could be but doesn't mean it is. I am trying to sell a 1990 talon right now that isn't under my name right now its not stolen i brought it off someone i know and havn't got it under my name cause i don't the money to do all the paper work since I am not working.

In CA and AZ a title is no better than a bill of sale, in AZ everything must be notarized but any title can be an unliened duplicate of an actual liened car making it useless. Only way to know if the deal is good is to bring a BOS/title to DMV and go for it. My buddy bought an rx7, title looked clear but was a duplicate. The car had a lien so when he tried to register they said :nono: he had to bring to a junkyard for 2 months while they titled it as abandoned then signed it over to him for a nominal fee.

Every state is different.
When I bought my tsi, guy had lost the title, He drove to the dmv on a sat, filed for a lost title, and got a new one in 15min.
That was in VA.
