Ok, this will be my first real post for my project. I feel it belongs more in the A/T drivetrain section, but as a new poster I cannot place it there. The question I have is simply, what is the top speed that a stock '91 tsi awd should be hitting in 2nd gear with the economy/power switch set to power? I just got my timing to the point that I'm only getting small spikes of knock count ( between 1 and 5 ). So now that I feel better about stepping on the gas, I'm trying to see if a new IPT end clutch is needed ( I know it's a good idea either way ). I get a horrible vibration sound at around 6200 rpm, and total loss of acceleration. I think the trans is slipping at this rpm and the noise I'm hearing is the engine still trying to rev. I have more parts sitting here waiting to go on the car, but I want to make sure the basics are covered and up to par before proceeding. Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered hear.

My 91 Talon A/T AWD at WOT shifted from 2nd to 3rd at 7000 RPM at 70 MPH.
The Power/economy switch has no effect on gear ratio, just shift points.

Perfect! Thank you for the fast reply:thumb:. I'm doing about 63mph at 7k, so the end clutches are looking like the issue here. Does yours make an awful sound, like a vibration noise, as you approach red line?

i know my 1 to 2 shift dosnt grab well at full power and sounds like a machinegun till i let off then it will be shifted, but i got a manual shift box and have no problems with that

My 1991 AWD Talon had pretty firm shifts at 7000 RPM while at WOT even when I traded it in for the 1998 at 120K+ miles.

The 1998 AWD stroker Talon I'm driving now has an IPT rebuild with a 4200 RPM stall torque converter. It now shifts with a BANG at 7000 RPM and makes all four tires happy at the same time.

My 99 stock auto gsx tranny shifts like a dream (knocks on wood) at 7000. Just so you can have a reference. Only a couple of times has it not been able to find overdrive since I've had the car. I was probably driving it too hard though.

Thanks for the info twack. I think you just described the noise I'm hearing. Mine also makes this noise right at the end of the rev range per gear. TunaTalon, mine isn't being firm at all. The shifts are coming very lazy, my 240sx had a more direct feel to it. This is why I'm thinking the end clutches need replaced. Do the 1g DSM's have a drop resistor for the A/T like my 240 did, or is it all internal on the trans. You guys have given me exactly what I was after. Thanks to both of you. Tell me how to +rep, and I will do so. I tried the "leave feedback" in each profile and it keeps saying I can't access this feature.

If the drop resistor you are referring to is part of the shift pressure, then yes, you can modify it. On a 91, it is the solid blue wire coming from the TCU to the transmission. I do not know what size you can put in there, but you can also get a potentiometer from Radioshack to splice into that wire and control shift firmness. I would go with a 1K or a 100 ohm 1/2 watt. Nothing higher or it will be too much restriction.

Thank you Tim for the input. I would assume this is also the same principal as the manual shift boxes available for the A/T cars.
