I was thinking about having my big16g ported and clipped but am wondering if its worth the money. It will cost me about $200. Will i notice a difference or no? Faster spool up, more top-end power? Any info will help, thanks guys.

clipping will increase spool time, BUT it will cost some power...so its essentially pointless unless you are looking to improve your low-end performance.

Porting on the other hand will improve performance with no side effects.

Actually clipping will do the opposite. When you clip a turbo you are cutting some material off of each blade on the exhaust wheel, therefore it takes the turbo longer to spool but since the blades are smaller they are less of a resistance at high RPM's which increases your topend.

Anyone knows where I can get the turbo clipped and ported in Las Vegas? If there's no one that can do it locally, who can do it the cheapest out of state, and how much is the shipping? Thanks for the replies. :thumb: :talon:

Don't get it clipped, port it yourself.

Agreed, most $95 port jobs offered by most vendor are with very minimal porting, mainly to get rid of the step. I suggest getting a die grinder and carbide burrs and do a completely port job as per vfaq. Port you manifold, turbine, and o2. You may also have boost creep soon so I would do some search and reading on how to port for creeping and take care of all that while everything is out. Porting is a lot easier than it sounds, the hardest part is getting started. Once you do you'll realize paying someone for porting is as ridiculous as paying some one to change your spark plugs. Happy porting. :)

Well, I've decided to get the turbo clipped. I probably won't notice the difference in lag, but for 10-20hp it's worth it IMO. If I do the porting myself, who can clip it for me? Thanks.

Hey, Would one advise to port and clip a FPBigT28? I would like to have more topend compared to the T25.

Thanks!

C.

Yeah, you definatly notice lag with a clipped turbo. But once it kicks in it kicks in hard. Trust me :)
If you want more top end and don't mind lag then clip away. 10 degrees should be plenty. Porting, hell yes. Port away

Any particular places to get the grinder and burrs?

Tool store. Sears, Mac Tools, people like those.

Anyone that sells die grinders sells the burrs usually.

get an electric long shaft die grinder this one is a absolute beast

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=44141

and get some carbine burs, they are very expensive though, i ahev some $30.00 bits, but you can do the whole job on 1 bit, and not even be able to tell that it was used, they are awsome, but make sure you KEEP IT COOL, spray oil on it or something else, because if it gets to hot, there goes your bit, make sure you port pretty deep, and go just a bit deeper than the step, and dont forget to do the wastegate as well, make sure that arm can open at a 90* degree angle, and port the hell out of your o2 housing
have fun :thumb:

You're probably not going to find carbide burrs from local hardware stores, mail order are usually the way to go. Here's where I got mine last year.

Unless you are all about the 1/4 mile clipping is stupid, you wont hit full boost untill you are in the upper rpm ranges.

As for porting, a good port job can help alot, a bad port job can cause weak points that will crack.

Dont use an electric di-grinder unless you have a foot control, if the grinder shaft bends(which isnt that uncommon) the grinder will get away from you quick. Most professional engine builders use pnumatic(air power) grinders as they are light, much easier to control, and they dont get hot with long run times.

I bought some carbide burr's and tried to port my turbo, and it didn't seem to work quite as well as the diamond tipped wheel thingy I used... But this is the only porting job I ever did, so it would probably be better to take the advice of the more experienced people. The bit I used, though, was a lot less expensive and I still only needed one (which also lasted well through porting my o2 housing). Just my 2 cents...

Can one heavily clip or slighty clip? How much more time will it take a ported FPBigT28 to spool up if it is clipped.

I want a daily driver, that has the top end pull.. But not too much lag...

I dunno if it is possible..
