I am thinking of tinting my windows, though right now I am in school in Pennsylvania, my car is registered in New Jersey. Has anyone have past experiences with this? Has anyone failed inspection for tinting their windows? Also what if I "sell my car to someone out of state" and just happen to buy the car back some time later and it has tinted windows? I read the procedure about registering out of state vehicles. But if you buy an out of state vehicle with tint they can't fail inspection can they?

By the way I just want to tint the side windows and maybe the back.

NJ tint is only acceptable, or "legal" under certain terms. Rear windows and passenger widows can be tinted to any level. However, in the State of NJ, it cannot be applied to any vehicle on the windshield, drivers side, or pass. side windows. Vehicles that have factory tint on any window is supposedly exempt.

Some websites for reference:

http://www.tintdude.com/laws.html

http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/NJ/

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/cleanair/faq.html

"Q: What are the New Jersey tint laws?
A: Basic tint laws for New Jersey:
No after market tint may be applied to front driver and passenger windows. After market tint on rear windows may not cover the 3rd brake light. Windshields may only be tinted 20% down from the top to help avoid sun glare. No mirror tint allowed anywhere on the vehicle."

If you plan on tinting the front windows, just note that chances are, you won't get pulled over in PA for it, but you most-likely will in NJ. This tint will prevent you from passing inspection, regardless of the original source/location of its application, and believe me, scraping it off is not what I would call a fun experience. Police are specifically trained and have technology to determine if tint is too high. My advice is not to get those portions tinted.

Good Luck.

But since DSM's are two door vehicles. The only "rear windows" are those small triangular shaped ones. So technically are those the only ones I can tint; along with the rear windshield?

Bingo.

Wicked,

This is what my car looked like with tint on all windows before I got pulled over by the NJ state police and was told "no tint on my drivers and passangers side windows" I was followed home and had to start peeling it off with the trooper watching.

This is my car now, just the back hatch tinted black and the rear triangles with the mirror tint. However NJ state inspection will fail you for mirror tint on any windows. So this past May, after I failed inspection for the morror tint. I taped off the triangles, painted them rattle can black, drove back to inspection with the paint still drying and passed because they were not mirrored anymore. I pulled into the parking lot next to the inspection station and scraped off the paint with a razor blade... LOL While the guy that gave me my new sticker was watching... NJ sucks with all its rules.

Not to steal the thread but: TURFNSURF Im guessin that you are talking about the tint that a a film that is put onto the window. What about the tint that is painted on or done by a professional shop? Is that also still illegal?

Shops use film. And yes, tint is tint.

You can always drive with the windows down :D

I did that for a while but in the midle of winter it's kinda cold to run with the windows down all the time. LOL

Turbofever,

Defiant is right, tint is tint. My tint was professionally installed, and it is a film applied to the inside of the windows.

I have my two back windows and my hatch tinted. I wanted to tint all of my windows, but the cops in Jersey are out of control with tint on windows. The inspection station will also fail you in a heart beat for having tint on the driver side and passenger side windows. NJ inspection stations are ridiculous. I failed inspection for having my corner markers clear with white bulbs. I had to buy factory side markers for the 5 minutes I was at the inspection station. Here's a pic of my car.
