got a timing question here.im doing the 4g63-4g63t swap.will my stock timing be ok b/c i have a s-afc or will i havta retard it a bit manually?ive heard that an afc will retard timing a bit.just want to be sure so i dont blow the head off my new motor,LOL.i wanna eventually run 12s so im building it for that,so overdoin it is ok by me.thanx.

I am not 100% sure, but I would run your timing at 5 deg advance like on a turbo car. If you are experiencing a lot of knock, lower your timing advance even more.

What parts are you using for the swap?

If you're using a turbo ECU, then just use all the turbo settings.

You wants 5 degrees @ idle, correct?? I have a timing light and am getting ready to time my car as well....

Could someone 'draw' a timing diagram---as to wear Im looking...when the car is idling...something as simple as this would help....I've never timed a 4g63t before. Thanks in advance.

I just dont know what marks on the 4g63t....and how hard it is to see (w/ timing light)...I know it's pretty easy on Honda, VWs, Nissans, etc.

Thanks,

my hanes manual says the timing is 5 deg on all 1g dsms so i dunno.i wont have a knock sensor,so ill just be depending on a lot-o-fuel to keep me safe.i just heard that an afc retards timing on your ecu as airflow goes up.l8r.

5 degrees on stock set up? I know if you run race gas you can bump it up a little, but I was just wondering exactly what marks there are? And what some guys get for timing!!!?? Thank you!

Up near the battery there is a little harness that I believe is pink. You need to ground that out to the frame someplace using alligator clips or something. Then where the timing belt is you look further down to where the harmonic balancer is. This is the area where you will want to flash the timing light. On the upper left hand corner of the valve cover there will be the big green army looking cam angle sensor. You will want to loosen a bolt on it so it pivots. By moving that up and down you will either advance or retard the timing. This is how I do it on my car at least.

On the timing belt cover, there is a little protrustion with nubs on it. It's also labeled, but on older dirty cars it may be hard to see.

The top nub is 0 degrees, then 5, 10, and 15. You want the mark on the crank pulley to be next to the second mark (5 degrees BTDC) every time the light flashes, if the timing pin is grounded and the logger is umplugged.

Use the VFAQ:

So do you line the mark on the crank pulley up w/ anything??
I'm guessing since it says to 'turn the crank pulley by hand if you want', but turn it to where? So basically what do you do w/ the notch after you mark it w/ white out? Where/what do you line it up w/?

Could someone give better instructions as to where the 'cap' and exactly how to 'ground the timing adjustment plug'....

Okay, you found your mark on the crank pulley right? Clean that up with some brake clean or something. Then take some white out and paint a line on your pulley where the mark is(that will make it easy to see). Now, using a jumper wire, you should ground that connector on the firewall(the manual also says to ground a pin at the DLC). Hook up your timing light to the battery and put the inductive clamp on the spark plug wire from cylinder 1. Making sure all your accessories are off, start up the car and point the timing gun at the crank pulley. If you have the nob on the timing light set to 0, start turning it until the timing mark on the pulley flashes at the '0' mark on the timing cover. Whatever your nob is at, is where your base timing is set.
