Hi, I did a timing belt change yesterday ( took 7 hours) and it went horribly bad. I re did it 4 more times and still not right. Note: original timing belt didn't break, just doing maintenance. When I start the car it starts rough and idles up and down rough as well. I tried to drive it around the block and I have no power at all. Car shakes when I press the gas to hard and if I barely put on the gas it still shakes and wants to die:cry: Anybody have any idea on what I did wrong and what I could do to fix my baby. I hope timing is off and I didn't bend any valves. I really need all the help I could get to get my baby running again. Any and all advice is highly appreciated and welcome. Thank you

Timing is definitely off. Remember to align your balance shafts as well as the crank and timing gears. Everything has to line up. Sounds like something is a bit off but have no fear. You may be able to redo the timing again to fix it.

Remember:

Cam dowels facing up.
Oil pump should be weighted. Spin it around and it should stop at the timing mark. if it doesn't spin it again.
Once everything is lined up put your belt on.
Loosen the tensioner pulley. Using a spanner wrench, rotate the pulley to the 2 o clock area and tighten it down.
Pull the auto tensioner pin and rotate the engine 6 times and ensure all your marks line up.

Also, the marks on the cams should be level with the head surface. A straight line on all for marks inside and outside the cam gears.

Timing Belt VFAQ

24.

Remove the balance shaft plug on the rear side of the cylinder block and insert a Phillips screwdriver {shank diameter 8 mm (.32 in.)} through the hole. The balance shaft is in the correct position if the screwdriver can be inserted at least 60 mm (2.4 in.). If the inserted depth is less than this only 20-25 mm (.8-1.0 in.), the oil pump sprocket must be rotated one full turn and timing marks realigned. Recheck the balance shaft position using the screwdriver to ensure that it can be inserted 60 mm (2.4 in.) or more. Keep the screwdriver inserted until timing belt installation is complete (Figure 13).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE that there is an easier way to do this. Simply rotate the mark on the oil pump sprocket until it is pointing straight up, and let it go. If the sprocket rotates towards (counterclockwise) the timing mark on the engine, the oil pump sprocket is aligned correctly. If it rotates away (clockwise) from the mark, spin the sprocket a full turn and test again, and it should properly rotate towards the mark now. Now line the mark on the sprocket back up with the mark on the engine. This avoids having to remove the rear access bolt entirely.

Also note:

Both camshaft sprocket timing marks must be in line with the top surface of the cylinder head (Figure 4).

As sometimes the cam gears may appear to have the marks lined up but may not be at the surface of the head.

Damn man sorrry to hear that, I just built my motor from the bottom up and had my mechanical tensioner bolt get loose. I have no compression on any of them. i'm screwed.

Sorry to hear the news man. I was super concerned when I did the timing for the first time as well. I just had my laptop open with VFAQ,Crappy DSM graveyard youtube video, and Hanes manual. I must have read over things 50 times while doing it. Having the right tools helped alot as well. Good luck with getting her running again.

Roberto 2g.... What are good tools to do. Took head off yesterday and ready for work now. Doing valve job due to bent ones. What would you recommend I have the shop do if I take it to them. On a tight budget. Put almost 2gran into her over past 2 weeks.

Did you happen to give the crankshaft six full turns and then wait for the tensioner to extend itself? My tensioner was actually frozen! It would have been a catastrophe if i left it.

If you lined everything up, the crank, cams and the front balance shaft should always meet the exact spot after two revolutions. The oil pump moves noticeably slower than the rest when you rotate them all, so a few more rotations are needed. If they all land on the same spot from where you started, your good to go.

Just blew my head gasket on a 99 spyder gst just hit 105,000 miles. My old lady ran her nice and hot overheated badly. I hope it goes smooth. I am sure I will have a surprise or two. This will be my first time. I plan on replacing all the necessary stuff while I am down there. Water pump, bse elim, gaskets ect. Did you get any of the timing tools? Good luck getting your ride back on the road.

Thanks for all the support. Sadly to say my gsT is still without a head. It is still in the shop and I'm waiting for my gasket set so the shop could finish there job. Only two bent valves oth intake. Everything else is good. Hope to get it back by Saturday so I could have the engine back in before I go back to my jc. Lets hope and pray.

I hope your car isn't as bad as it sounds. I thought everything was wrong but not two bent valves. Give us updates on the progress. Hope it goes well.
