Why is it recommended that you replace the auto tensioner when u do a timing belt? Is it really necessary? My engine has 144xxx miles on it if it matters.

Thanks
Brandon

What he said. It's job is to keep tension on the belt. If it doesn't do that properly the belt becomes loose and teeth slip causing all sorts of delightful damage. Usually just bent valves and nicked pistons....nothing big.

I'd replace the idler pulley as well... Especially if it's still the original... The bearings have to be pretty worn at this point and a seized idler will kill your timing belt and subsequently your top end just as quick...

And if you still have them the balance shaft belt as well...
