time for rims on the talon...

its time for new rims for the talon. im debating between 17" and 18", and im not sure of width. if i go with a 17" it would be a 7" wide rim. (for some reason, mine has 16" on it now, and was supposed to come with 17s.) right now its a 205/55R16, and the section width (according to goodyear) is 8.4 inches. 17x7s would be a 215/45R17, and the section is 8.5". if i go with 18x8, id run a 225/40R18, and it would be a 9" width. the thing is i don't know what offset to get the wheels at, because i don't want them sticking out (like on my buddie's WRX), and i don't want them rubbing anything either. anybody have 8" wide wheels that knows the proper offset, or know where or how i can find that out?

38-40mm offset is optimal for 17x8" rims on a 2G. As for the tires you will either have to go with a 225/45/17 or a 245/40/17 to keep the overall radius the same for it doesnt screw up your speedometer

im looking at a set from American Racing that has a +42 offset. would that cause any problems? and would a 225 width tire rub?

97 98 talon tsi AWD (and only the AWD) like their gsx bretheren came stock 17x6,5 uberheavy alloys with 215/55/r 17

Ive done the calculations and a 225/45r17 is about 2-3% off. the closest match about .5% bigger is a 235/45r17... ie 75 is really only about 69mph on a 225/45 and is about 76 on a 235/45. that extra 5-6 mph on the highway can make a big difference on a long trip in terms of cabin noise and rpm. you have to run about 80-82 indicated to be close to the speed limit of 75mph.

same with the 225/40r18 and the 235/40r18... its about hte same % off or on.

I'd just go ahead and get the 235/45r17, the rims and tires will be lighter and have a smoother ride than the 18's... believe me 225/45r17s are plenty stiff enough for a daily or weekend driver. you can use 7.5 inch rims which will be easier to find and less expensive generally than the 17x8.

my car was supposed to have 17s on it. the tag on the door tells me it came with 17s. the tires that are on it now are 16s. i don't know how that happened, but thats the way it works with used cars. anybody know where i can get my speedometer reprogrammed, because i don't want to have to convert speed in my head, and the mileage wouldn't be accurate if i run it with the speedo not calibrated

I've done the calculations, too, and I've found that 225/45/r17 is less than 2% off. For reference, my 215/55/r16 combo is dead-on, and the 205/55/r16 that I used to have was just less than 2% off.

Also, a 2% difference at 70mph is going to get you roughly 1.5mph over or under, not the 6mph or so that you've stated above (that would be about 8% difference, which is huge). I don't see any need to recalibrate the speedo for 2%, unless you're that anal.

if its only 2 mph off it doesn't matter. it was the one that was 6 mph that bothered me. GT40Mk- the rims i was looking at were 686, but the biggest size they make are 17x7. im looking for a 6 or 7 spoke, but it has to be chrome.

sorry forgot to include that the factory speedo seems to be about 2-4% optimistic as well.
maybe that is what I am seeing in addition to the smaller tires?

in anycase plug some numbers into this one and it will tell you how much the speedo will be off (not counting the inherent speedo error)

in any case what i calculated is that a 235 is definately closer in diameter, with a much larger footprint... with the ultra low gearing of an AWD there is little reason to put any tire shorter than is necessary on there, and will negatively impact your MPG, NVH, and ride comfort at highway speeds.

perhaps I mixed up the factory sidewall % when I input it this time because I am not getting a big error now either... but i do know that the speedo is 5mph off at 75...
