Ok i just got my timing belt, water pump, etc. replaced and asked the mechanic what that high pitched coffee grinder noise was coming from the transmission area. He told me the Throw out bearing needed to be replaced and i was wondering how hard it is to do on your own. I normally do work on my car on my own but im in college and away from home so i didnt have time for the timing belt. If i had about a week to work on it is it possible to complete this job, or do i need special tools or equipement. The clutch and transmission are foreign territories to me. Any input would be much appreciated!

Gotta drop the trans to do it. But theres not really any special tools required to do it. Just make sure if you don't accidentally mis-align the clutch.

you wont have to worry about mis aligning the clutch if your just changing the TOB, just be careful not to push on the fingers of the pressure plate...this would release the clutch disk...just drop the tranny, the TOB is around the input shaft on the fork...very easy fix once the trannies on the ground....:thumb:

also...make sure its a TOB noise and not a Tranny bearing noise...

Depressing the clutch pedal and getting a noise is most likely a bad TOB...

If its making noise in neutral with the clutch pedal up...most likely tranny bearing...

While you have the tranny off, replace the axle seals (driver and passenger side), the thow out bearing clip, fork boot, check the pivot ball for wear, everything. Make sure you use and OEM Mitsubishi TOB. It's one of those cases where the Mitsubishi part is better than aftermarket. You'll regret it if you don't.

I replaced everything when I had my tranny off for a clutch job. All of those little things are really cheap, and dropping the tranny with no lift or transmission jack was a whore and a half.

I had a TOB go bad that would squeel when the clutch was up and would get quiet when you pressed the pedal. They aren't hard to change, but IMO the trannies are a b*tch to get back in.

40.00 bearing that will take a day to repair yourself, or 300-500 by a mechanic. Not hard, but a real pain, and time consuming. If your having it done, you might as well replace the clutch, fork, fulcrum ball, 200 now or another 600 later on.

If the sound goes away or lessens when its warn, its more than likely a tob, a bearing in the trans would cause speed related problems, like chatter and difficulty to shift. Allot of times the tob will make a noise until it warms up (freezing and below temps). The condensation on the bearing froze, which froze the bearing.

:shhh:
LoL... Yea it is a pain to get back in.

I agree though sounds like a tob. A week is plenty of time, make sure you get it back in within a few days just to have some extra time if anything goes wrong.

Thanks for all the input!!! Im gonna try it this christmas break. Let you all know how it goes!

I believe I am having the same problem with my car. Does it hurt the transmission or clutch or anything if it is not changed out immediately? My car has been doing that for awhile now but still shifts perfect.

According to my mechanic it will just get more annoying and louder and wont damage anything but i've learned you cannot always trust mechanics. Mine shifts perfectly too but that noise is like finger nails on a chalkboard!

When my TOB started making noise it only took 2 weeks for it to fail and grenade all the fingers on my pressure plate. Don't wait on it.
