Third gear slips

Alright, I plan on buying a 1995 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. It is located in another state, and I didn't have the time to go look at it, so the seller and I agreed on taking it to a nearby Mitsubishi dealership to have it inspected. The dealership found that whenever the car is in third gear and you go WOT and it hits about 3/4 boost the RPM's go up but the car ceases to pull. My question is: is this just a clutch or will the car need a rebuilt transmission? I appreciate anyone who offers advice.

it is only in third gear? How many miles does it have. It sounds more like a clutch but it is odd that it only does it in third gear.

When my tranny last let go, it did that. My guess is that it is just a clutch. It could be that the clutch might have some oil on it or water? I dunno, but when mine did that I had dumped from low rpms 4th to high r's 2nd and it felt like it was slipping. Then the case split in half. This probably wont happen to you. But be wary.

The car has 155,000 miles on it. The mechanic said it only did it in third, which I also found quite odd. I really hope it's just a clutch....

well, manual trannies usually dont "slip", they just break. if it was an automatic, then it would be a different story.
