If I shift into the third gear above 3,500RPM, I can hear a crunch, but if I take it easy and shift real low, it doesn't make that noise. It also makes the same noise when I try to downshift into second (but I am not going fast at all)

Is this the synchros? I bought my DSM 3 days ago and I am curious if I should ship it to Shep before something more serious wears/breaks inside the transmission.

Yep, it's probably the synchronizers.

If you want to shift when you rev high without it griding, shift slowly. When you downshift, you have to double-clutch (clutch, put it in N, let out the clutch, rev to about where you will be at your current speed in the lower gear, clutch, then downshift.)

Takes some getting used to, but I do it almost subconsciously. If you want your synchros to last after the rebuild, double clutch whenever you can, especially while downshifting.

It will also help if you change your tansmission fluid. use BG Syncroshift, Redline MTL or GM Syncromesh(what I have in mine). After I put the Syncromesh in the the crunching is pretty much gone, I still double clutch though cause I don't like hurting my syncros LOL

Thanks guys. I'll try to change the fluid tomorrow.

How many quarts do I need to buy for my Talon's tranny?

You'll have to buy 3 but the tranny takes about 2.5

Also Before you drain it, make sure you can fill it back up, The way I did it is a hose with a funnel, took a little while that way but it worked.

Syncromesh is awesome stuff!!! When you double clutch on downshifts, be careful. If you don't do it properly it can do more harm than good.

I usually just rev match when I downshift (Although I realize you should do that while double clutching), and it seems to shift pretty nice.

I know this sounds completely reversed, but one thing I've found that helps while driving or racing is gassing the throttle a little and slipping the clutch as you pull the car out of gear to move on to the next higher gear. It somehow gets the transmission to sync better. This has not only worked on both DSM's I've driven with worn synchronizers, but also with my 96 Mustang GT and its notchy/grinding T-45 transmission.

Before you argue with me, try it!

An easy way to fill it FYI is if you look on top of the trans about half way between the bracket for the shifter cables and where the atach to the trans, there is a 19mm bolt head. This is a bolt with a detent ball and spring inside it. Just remove it (the ball and spring are pressed in so they won't fall out) and fill from there. If you remove the upper IC hose and the one shifter cable that almost directly over it from both the trans and the bracket (remove the horseshoe clip) you can fit the bottle straight down. Just cut the tip, hold your finger over it and drop it in place. VERY easy to fill this way :). You just have to be careful if using thick additives like lucas and such- they will start to back up the hole and take a while to go flow down. Hope this helps.
