I was driving yesterday and noticed that my third gear grinds whenever I downshift into it. I looked through the forums and read about replacing the synchros and was wondering if there is anything else I can try to fix it. It's strange because it's only when I downshift, from 2nd to 3rd is fine, but 4th to 3rd grinds. Maybe I need to change my tranny fluid? I can't even remember the last time I did it, I just got done with school for the semester. Thanks in advance.

Yea my car was doing that too, then i guess my tranny finally gave out cause now when i try to take off it just grinds, and the wheels lock up. Now i just gotta take it apart and find out what happened.

Ouch, alright. This definitely seems like something that needs to be looked at, maybe I can find some more info on the forums. I searched yesterday, but nothing really like this came up as I don't have a constant grind yet.

Dont try to compare your fwd n/t chrysler tranny to the mitsu awd tranny. They are 2 totally differnt beasts.

To the op, change the tranny fluid. I would suggest trying penzoil syncromesh from autozone.

my trans in my 96 had a slight 3rd gear grind, i put some fresh syncromesh in it, an it went away so it could be your fluid or possibly slightly low on fluid.

Sorry for the double post and the noobish questions, but I'm not really familiar with anything transmission related and figures it's better to ask than go doing this stuff myself. Would you guys recommend changing the fluids in the t-case and rear as well with mobil gear oil or something?

Oh, and I was reading on the forums and talking to my brother and came across something about how changing the tranny fluid can cause it to fail if it has never been done before (some people here said over 10 years, and my car is a 95' so I'm kinda worried). I never changed the fluid before and I have no idea if the previous owner has either, what should I do?

Ok thanks guys. By the way, any reason you recommend syncromesh over syncroshift?

I would suggest changing all the fluids that havent been done yet. Personally, I use redline shockproof in my TC and rear. I use the recommended 50/50 mix of shockproof heavy and syncroshift in my shep tranny. For your tranny, I would just run either syncro-(whatever) or a 50/50 mix of your choice syncro- and redline shockproof light.
