how far does a thermostat open if it is good? I threw mine in a pot of boiling water and it opened like a 1mm

Not sure, but is the car overheating, or taking forever to heat up?

well, the problem is that the car overheats and then shuts off when the temp gauge gets about 75% to the red. I have no coolant flow. The hose doesn't get hot, I have no heat in the car. There is no coolant leaking from the water pump, no noises from the water pump. I have replaced the thermostat and still nothing. I dunno what is wrong with this thing.

could it be that because no noises from the pump that it stopped working...just a thought

it should open up about 3/8 of an inch but if there's no flow it's gotta be the water pump

Might as well replace the timing belt too.
