Hi,
I'm looking to buy an Eclipse GST and I just wanted to know who of you 2G owners out there really had crankwalk and at which mileage, so I can see about the probability of crankwalk.

Crankwalk is over-rated. Plain and simple. Chances are you won't get it, but if you do, you can get it fixed cheaper than you think. On a side note, do a couple of searches for crankwalk... you'd be surprised at what you come up with... :thumb: :D ;)

Maybe you should start reading about dsm's then ask questions.

Its not the milage of the car that causes crankwalk. If anything you should ask what kind of clutch you need to put on the car. Or what stage clutch is too much.

145 miles stock clutch crankwalk but it is perty cheap to fix reubilt 6 bolt shorblock 300 after all said and done about 700 with new engine and i think it does happen but not enought that it should scare u away

Depending if he would even do the work himself, swapping out his shortblock is not the most fun task. By the sound of it, I don't think he would be doing the work himself. If that's the case, it's going to cost you well over $700 for a new shortblock. If you're not prepared to do anything like that, then yeah, it should scare you away.

Allright, that is about what I learned from doing a search in here reading some more stuff on the web...just wanted to know if there would come up something new... :D

BTW the kid's kewl ;)

I am not "scared" about anything, it's just that I live over the big waters in germany and we donot have a lot of guys around who actually know anything about dsms or the Turbo Eclipse ( they weren't sold here, only with a 4g63 NT engine )...

Is there a less likely chance for Autos to get crankwalk?

It's less likely because there is no clutch pressure plate pushing against the crankshaft. But it can still happen, it's just rare that it does.

Ok, pedal pressure and clutch this and that are not what causes CW. Nor is the fact that it is automatic vs. manual. Nobody knows what causes this hence nobody knows what will fix the problem or prevent it 100%. This has been discussed waaaaay to many times.

These things are what we call "helping hands". They do not cause, but can promote the malfunction or walking crank syndrome.

Do not let it stop you from buying a DSM. If the car you are looking at has anything wrong with the 7bolt then walk away unless you want to replace. And of course I recommend a 6bolt, any of us would if it is on your dime and not Mitsu.

There are plenty of DSM's out there that are for sale with no problems. Living in Germany sort of puts a dent on your selection, but they are out there.

Is a 93 AWD with a 1400lb clutch too much? Daily driven?

Friend of mine got his daughter a 96' GST and it walked at like 60Kish and he put bought a used crankin, replaced main and rod bearings and front and rear seals and it has like 30K on since then and he monitors for crankwalk ever oil change, endplay hasnt moved off of .0055". That fix cost him around $350 i think.

I stand corrected. But, he needs to remember that this is all with the assumption that he's doing the work himself. You and I both know that the price would be much higher if a shop did it for him.

Chris

ive been crankwalked in my auto once..
its rare it does happen.. it donest happen to every gsx...
tho alot will have crank play it wont happen.. someone close
this thread before it gets out of hand.
crankwalk is rare
crankwalk happens alot
crankwalk donest happen to 95's
crankwalk is the worst in 97's
crankwalk is because of the bearings
crankwalk is because of the block
crankwalk is because of the crank
crankwalk is because the mustang god got pissed off when u beat an 04 cobra..

there all true and there all false.

my point CRANKWALK HAPPENS
just measue the amount of play on the crank thats the only way to tell..
i believe 7bolt should be swaped out for six bolts anyway because shit you know much many pounds that extra bolt weighs? like .5 lbs.. thats major weight reduction.

97 spyder gst, walked @ 58K. and it's not as cheap as you think it is to rebuild. i've decided to keep the 7-bolt instead of the 6-bolt coz i couldn't find any 6-bolt at a cheap price and it was gonna be about the same amount to rebuild. i opted to rebuild, coz at least my motor will be like new again instead of a motor that maybe beat up already. coz of crankwalk, 2 of my stock pistons was damaged, 1 connecting rod, 1 disentegrated rod bearing and of course the crankshaft itself was beyond repair.

forged arias pistons w/ .030 over bore.... $420
eagle rods (h beam).... $330
cometics metal head gasket.... $60
machining of the block and polishing a used 7-bolt crank.... $430
used 7-bolt crank.... $100
labor.... $800
driving my DSM again.... PRICELESS

I don't think crankwalk is over-rated at all. if this isn't such a big deal then why did magnus motorsports go to such an extent trying to find out more info on crankwalk.

you cant see the probability of something by only asking those to post that have crankwalked.. that doesnt even make sense.

I'm sure he already made up his mind a month or two ago.

my friend's little brother had a 95 tsi awd with exhaust, mbc, turbo, etc on it when he bought it. There was somewhere between 100-120k miles when he got it. It walked a few thousand miles later. That really sucked b/c it spun a bearing first and 600-700 miles after that was fixed the damn thing walked. Gotta love DSMs :dsm:
