I don't see why the manual swap would be hard especially, when these cars are also made in a manual version. Should be a bolt on affair. There are plenty of threads about manual swaps within this forum. If it's a really good deal to you, buy it. You just have to buy all the other parts you need for the manaul swap, which could add up quick. If it's not such a good deal to you, I'd say just buy a manual 2g because you'd probably come out cheaper in the end.

bro to bad you live in cali here in ny there are a a$$ load of 1g turbo awd dsm for that price in way way better shape for the same price. i dident get to see it as the add is removed but hell go under buffalo/rochester ny craigslist and check em out get it shipped it will be worth it! i paid 2200 for my 2gb tsi awd with 80k and mint every thing!

everyone still against it? LOL

Well the links dead so I never saw it but I don't really see why everyone's hating on it. I'd definitely do a compression test on it, and check the turbo out. Make sure it's not some ebay crap turbo, and check the shaft play. The crack in the manifold would have to be pretty freaking huge (and super loud) to not spool the turbo. Probably has some major boost leaks. Does the A/C work?

i dont ever use a/c...i planned on ripping it out. maybe some hoses are off. the kid put the turbo on himself at his grandmas garage. i will have to tear off the heat shield to check it all out. i plan on doing this tomorrow. its 1200 bucks btw. sorry, the link is dead, he took it off since i bought it.

Manual swaps are not that hard. you might have to Fab. a bracket or too but other than that everything should be there for you already. good luck

I have found 3 options in my price range please help me make up my mind

1991 White TSI AWD 120k miles, stock except for CD player
1993 Red TSI AWD 158k miles, bone stock
1995 Green TSI 139k miles, bone stock

They are all asking $2000 and are all about 2 and a half hours away

What are your opinions?

depends if you like the 1g or 2g body better. i wish that i had one with 1g interior and dash with the 2g outside design

I'm a 1ga guy so I would say the 91 Talon. The 2nd gen for 2k sounds almost to good to be true if nothing is wrong with it. Another thing is the 91 is the only one of the three with a 6 bolt motor. Just my .02

I really just want a reliable car that i can drive for a year or so then build the car to make around 275hp. nothing to crazy. The bodies all look good for being as old as they are according to the owners none have been in a crash. i like both body styles. I have not driven any of them yet because they are all 3 hours away and all in different directions.

Strike that, the original one i wanted did not sell like i thought it had.

Too bad they are so far away from you. It would be good to test drive them all. Can you get pictures of all of them? That will help narrow things down a bit. Are they all 5-speeds? I would also ask the owners about maintenence. I would choose the one with the most updated maintenance since you want reliability.

Also, 275hp is a pretty easy task with these cars. It won't cost too much either.

how much would you estimate it would cost to get to 275hp and is that a low enough gain to be able to skip on tuning because i know that is where a lot of cost can come from.

i've owned two 2g's before when i got my 1g and i must say my 91 GST was just better for the money. the 1g i think is superior with the 6-bolt and better turbo. but the 2g looks way better (2gb eclipse but that seems out of your budget) also i wouldn't pay more than $1500 for a 1g (i got mine with a rebuilt turbo and 165k on the speedo all stock for $800, then again it had a slipping clutch and NO paint LOL)

well. i just located a 1996 awd 5-speed that i THINK is cheap, but needs alot of stuff put back on it. the final price i can get the car for is 800.00. but it will cost me 200.00 to tow, so its around 1,000.00 bucks for the car.

it needs.......headlights, front bumper, mirrors, the two lower ground effect caps that go at the bottom of front fenders, both airbags, all four struts, rear wing, turbo, maf and all the intercooler piping, exaust manifold, and it needs rims/tires

it has fiberglass z-3 fenders, carbon fiber hood,3 inch turbo back exaust, turbo timer.
the car has no rot or any dents. it is real clean. this car is/was a theft recovery.
i dont really need the car, i already have a 1g awd in new condition but i love the 2g body.
is this car more suited to put back together or to part out?, or should i leave it sit. i have had plenty of these cars and wouldnt mind having another but money is tight.
