I would buy it. 6/4 combos are hard to come by where I live, but may differ where you are. Anyways 600.00 isnt bad assuming i bought mine for 800 not running.

can you get some pics?
Either way, i would pick it up, if you end up not wanting to mess with it, you could part it out and make a lot of money.

Or get it running and bring another DSM back to life.

I have a 1.8 93 laser right now, but as we all know very slow LOL.
I meen ive always like DSM and i got it really cheap and engine and tranny were perfect so I thought it was a good idea to pick it up as my first DSM.

Ive always wanted a TSI or GSX or even just a GST but all the of those were beatin on like no other and could tell were not worth buying.

I want to know how much i should be looking to pay for a TSI, GSX, RS Turbo, or GST that is in pretty good mechanical work.

Im wondering how much some one with one of these cars paid for theres.

I am also wondering if I can get a turbo DSM, how much money am i looking at to boost up the horse power and torque.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.

Do a search for the upgrades for your dsm. As far as money it seems as bit broad pick one item then go from there, with your goals and budget.

i've seen few around my area for 2,500 ish for a decent one ( gsx ). You can definetly build your 1.8 car. Buy a 2.0 turbo block and rebuild to stock or upgrade pistons, rods, crank etc... and a turbo fwd tranny. I had a 1.8 when I first stared out also. Made it to a 2.0 then 2.0 fwd turbo. And now awd. For a swap obviously you need the engine, transmission, and engine wiring harness with ecu... Maybe if you could find one at a junk yard. Or maybe you just want to buy an awd? It can be done though. My first car after was turbo'd took 3rd place at Nopi Nationals in washington D.C. in 2003 If you have any questions on it. P/M me.. good luck

I would say the average price for a good condition gst, gsx, or tsi is around 3,000 depending on the year and milage. Once you have a turbo car you can do the basic upgrades to get more power. Exhaust, intake, and so on

As for buying a dsm, you never know what you are getting.

In some areas, you can find turbo and non-turbo models for about the same price or maybe just a little more (stock or near stock 1g's). I paid $1750 for my old 1994 GS w/ 6 bolt engine, 16g, 2g mas, exhaust, etc. I took a chance since it was modified but, I put 22,000 miles on the car before I sold it in 2008. It was my daily and never let me down. Around that same time, I saw stock non-turbo 1g's for around $1500.

If you want really good deals, you have to find cars that may need minor work. This is for those who do their own mechanical work and know what to look for. You can find them for under a $1000 all day, if you look long enough.

I say it's worth it. It sounds like an easy fix. Like others have said, you could even part out if you want and get more than $600 out of it.

Yeah it's all about finding the deals where people just want to get rid of them because they are too lazy to do some minor work. I got mine for 1900 just because it had a body kit and a bad paint job.

i just bought my tsi awd pretty recently. I paid 4300 and it was completely stock. got it from a one time owner who was in his 40's.

I bought my 91 tsi awd for 2k. It didn't run but I had an idea what was wrong before I got it.

The car came with: TRE stage 3 trans fidanza flywheel. comp 100-200 cams aem cam gears ss valves, bc springs and retainers, ACT 2100 and poly mounts.

The only thing it need to run was a ecu...

but To get to my specs I tore it down replaced the clutch (old one had 500 miles on it) fix some broken bolts and did a complete restore on the car.

oh it only had 60k miles on it. and a new motor with 5k on the motor. Head was P&P.

I have his reciepts and he had over 6k into the car and I bought.

FMIC, 750cc injectors, 255lph pump, AFPR, Fidanza 3.2 clutch, Fidanza friction plate, Wideband, water temp/boost gauge, FP race manifold, 16g (non ebay crap) megan springs, new kyb shocks, camber kits, 3" downpipe, 2 1/2 in cat back, test pipe, DSMlink, NGK plug wires. I spent close to 3k if not more and the car should be put together this weekend and get her tuned.

should be pretty quick this summer.
if your going to buy a modded car or even a turbo car just make sure you have the money to do things right. its going to cost money if your not going to do it right or be cheap its not the best choice.

So I'm looking at a 92 talon tsi awd from a guy on a local dsm forum.

This is his story on what was wrong with it:

Timing jumped, bent the valves.

Replaced the head with a "good head" fresh from the machins shop.

Installed head with new HG and some other components as well as the auto tensioner, which was the cause of the jumped timing.

Car wouldn't start. Did a compression test and got 60's across the board. Did a wet test and it wenrt to 90's

Ok so that's his story, I'm really interested in this car cause its super cheap, however I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into as far as the engine is concerned. I've done searches on the low compression topics, there was a similar case (swapping head, jumped timing etc.) And there was no resolve.

Any advie would be appreciated guys, thanks.

looks like it is going to need a motor rebuild. If the car itself is in a good shape (no or little rust, paint looks good, interior, suspension and other things) and it is a good deal - I'd say go for it, put a good motor in and enjoy.

Welcome to Tuners!

Sounds like either the head gasket didnt seal, or there's a problem with the head.
If the car is in good shape, its probally worth it.

A good thing to get into before posting any questions or problems you may encounter is the search function on this site. Chances are, somebody has had the same problem and its been posted many times.

When you say rebuild is it something that I could do as a project or is it gonna be more hassle then its worth. The guy also has 2 other 6 bolt blocks condition unknown.

I wasn't implying that you didn't. I was referring to the future.

The low compression can be caused by;
Bad Rings
Blown Head Gasket (or not sealed)
Cracked Head
Bent Valves
Head Not Torqued correctly
