My friend built and tuned it. He was a mechanic for Mitsu for five years now hes a mechanical engineer. I had one dsm a long time ago but never really did anything to it
(420A) so I don't know too much about good setups for the 4g63 for reliability
(and power).

I am staring to get into DSMs and would like some opinions if i should buy a car i just found. I found a 1998 Eclipse GS-X completely stock except for an in-dash navigation which functions as the sterio deck too. It is only $4k and i would rather buy a stock one than one that is already modded because I don't know if they did anything right. I will do all the modding myself i have worked on many cars before (mostly V8s) and I am hoping that these will be easy for me to figure out. So please let me know what you think about the car.:D
PS. I have done a lot of reading about DSMs so I am not completely ignorant about the cars but i don't know everything about them.

You didn't mention how many miles were on the car or how the condition of the body is. Has it been regularly maintained? If not, you will need to plan on doing things like timing belt, water pump, tune up etc. before it would be good to go. Just make sure that timing belt has been done recently and if not make it a priority. ;)

Yeah, i know i didnt mention that i emailed the guy and hopefully he emails me back today answering some of my questions. The body looks like its in really good shape and if the miles aren't too high and it has been taken care of i think i will probably buy it. Thanks for the info and fast reply :D

All the stuff listed above, as far as the timing goes you need to do it anyways, and even if he has a receipt Id still do it as insurance.

Thats a good price if it's indeed an unmolested 2g.
I was a v8 guy too (fbodies and lt-1s) you'll fit easy.. just get over the "aint no replacement for displacement" motto when turbos are involved.

Good find and welcome to the DSM community!

(pic's please LOL) Was the car ever wrecked? Does it have a clean carfax report? Is there any rust? How well does the trans shift? There's more to reliability then just a well built and tuned engine.

Okay so when i do get an Eclipse the first thing i will do is the timing belt because that seems to be major thanks for the info. With the "aint no replacement for displacement" i got over that a little while ago when a friend of mine got a Sti and I felt the turbo in that LOL.

Update: Sadly he emailed me back and it is an automatic. Huge Disappointment:(

Oh well that's pretty cool I really enjoy working on cars so it'll be nice having something to do as long as it doesn't run my pockets dry and isn't a everyday thing or need to rebuild all the time LOL. What would you say the worst part of owning a DSM is because i never really see many cons about them.

Having something to fix, but i enjoy it, as long as it doesnt cost a ton like you said. That is really the only con i can see, other than that i am in love with my gst, and hey mines and automatic also! Look into getting a manual shift box like i did, you shift on demand just like a manual. Not only that but there is a switch where you can put it to the "triptronic" or automatic factory shifting.

Im thinking about buying this, im not gonna post pics, bc idk if the seller would want that. but any advice? this would be my first dsm. but my buddy has one, so im pretty familiar with them.

I would be very careful buying what someone else has built. It's very risky and I personally have been burnt before. Just be careful no one can really decide for you.

+1 Its always better to build it yourself unless you can physically check the engine (outside of the car). I was lucky and I was able to and so far, everything checks out.

yeah ik ive considered this, and i cant afford to get burnt literally. Ik the DNP mani has had some cracking problems. and i dont think i saw a fuel pump listed.
i would be trading my 2001 gti vr6 for this. and ik its back in time 10 years but i really want some boost in my life.:sneaky:

its a 91 and its on 5zigen wheels and a nice red paint job. its very clean.

Hello guys I am just curious if I got a good deal or not on my 2g gst eclipse i bought it when it has 124k mile on it for about 4,600 so i was thinking if it was a good deal or not

Thank You

I would def. check it out from bumper to bumper. check every nut and bolt on that car. With me being a total VW hater i say get it! LOL But tread lightly on this just to be safe.

haha dont hate the Dub's

but yeah, it says nothing about a new fuel pump. and ther're a few other things that worry me, like the manifold, and obviously the interior, axles, he said it has a brand new clutch but it is still slipping so he is replacing the master cyl. plus there was a carboard sheet laying under the car in the pics, so im guessing he is leaking something.

idk, i really want something like this, but being 16 and not having a job doesnt leave me with much money to fix things with.
