Well the gst is venting and doesn't have anything to tune with. Plus no PS is a pain in the arse. Looks like the guy was trying to get the most he could out of it by removing everything he could. I would guess she was abused.

Go for the GSX you'll never regret it. But at least try to talk them down like a flea market. LOL

A Gst with a 16g is so fun. I know everyone says go with the GSX, but be different. But anyways GST are just as much fun exspecially with a 16g.

LOL...go with AWD....the GS-T sounds like it was abused....and one other quick question for you....do you know it has a 255 fuel pump....if he doesn't have a reciept i would assume it doesn't have it. that is the easiest way to help yourself out later on down the road when you're trying to get a good tune and for some reason you can't seem to get enough fuel. If he really knew what he was doing he would have gotten rid of that stock plastic intake pipe as well. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk...just trying to help you protect yourself.

I never really like those cars until now! Get the GSX like everyone else stated you can't go wrong with AWD!

Even though the GST inside is nice.......buy a Vr4 and call it a day :)

Just get 1g AWD with 6 bolt motor wouldnt have to worry about the 2g crankwalk and can find them cheaper. they have more room under the hood to work on. thats my $0.02

BUT:
GST has less miles, looks nice, even better with GSX wheels the 17" and has more mods but might have been beaten on. but has some good mods might wanna add afc for tuning or dsmlink but its running 14lbs that pretty much stock boost so its kinda safe. Its FWD sucks at drag racing but will be good for pulls.

GSX has more miles which you dont know how long its going to last before you have to rebuild it. I bet it was beaten on and getting launched, slaped around also and depending on the car its self. Its awd better for launches off the line when drag racing, snow ect.

But what do you really want the car for? Racing or just dd. if just dd id say gst but if your going to drag race then the GSX. Id test drive them and see whats a better buy

Go for the GSX!!!
I don't care if the GST has less miles and more mods, it also is way more sketchy. Someone else's half a** work and they probably beat on that car like it was there job... Plus with AWD your 1st and 2nd gear are not so worthless.

GSX is the way to go. I've had 4 GS-T's and 3 GSX's. Over all I would say AWD is more then you could ever ask for in the long run. PS AWD in the snow = FUN!!!

i'll be doing a lot of daily driving, but i do live in madison, WI and theres a lot of snow, and i know the GSX will help since it has AWD but i really dont want to deal with all the things that brake with the awd drivetrain. theres also no track in madison, WI so i'll probably have to stick with street lights and highway pulls.

Out of all my AWD's I have never had anything in my drivetrain brake.

I'm putting out 376whp and nothing has broke.

It's all about how well you take care of your car and doing mod's with moderation and research.

Probably not something you should say here. A lot of people on here do run on the streets but it is highly discouraged and not really to be spoken of.

well just get what you like i guess test drive before you buy it if you can everyone says gsx then go for it i know they are fun and great in snow. there both DSM just have some extra money saved up because you will need it and wont know when she will break down and there not cheap to maintanice/fix. I think you'll have an engine problem before your tranny.

thanks for all the feedback guys, im going to test drive both and throw offers at them, maybe i'll even get them both haha but yeah im going to do compression tests and check the spark plugs and check the tread on the wheels, check the clutch, and base myself on that. anything else i should check for???
thanks again.

DSM ROTT!!!

GSX fo sho cause you will end up like me buying a gst spending lots of $$ on it then end up getting a GSX in the end. But for me i started out with a N/t Then to a GS-T then to a GSX

yeah i started out with a 95 eclipse GS when i got my license, 2 months later the tranny went out and it sat for like a year, i ended up buying a 96 sentra for 500 bucks and then sold it for 2200 LOL and then bought a 99 eclipse GS that i had for a year and then sold it recently for 4500, now im car-less but am gonna get a DSM for sure.

ok guys so i've read multiple threads and visited countless websites reading the pros and cons of GST's and GSX's but i still cant decide which one to get, i am going to buy either a GST or a GSX this friday no matter what, its part of my new years resolution LOL. anyways i've looked all over the place and i finally found a black GST and a black GSX, i wont go for another color, anyways at first said i was going to go with the GSX no questions asked but i dont know anymore, let me know what you think, here are both the 99 black GST and the 98 black GSX my only two options. they are both asking $5000.....Don't get ahead of yourself...I'll explain my reason for saying this.

here are the mods the 99 GST has...
-16g Turbo Upgrade-Daily Drive 14lbs Of Boost-Polyurethane Mounts-Greddy Turbo Timer-Greddy 3 Inch Exhaust-Greddy Hard Pipe Kit-ACT Street Clutch-Aftermarket Headlights-Eclipse Brand Cd/Mp3 Player-Stainless Steel Interior Trim-Autometer Boost & Air/Fuel Gauges....All this stuff SOUNDS/SEEMS well and good....but BEWARE. Again, I will explain myself shortly.

Having the knowledge about these cars that I do now, vague descriptions and non-specific parts, like some of these that caught my eye, bother me.
-Big Side Mount Intercooler....As far as I know , there isn't a BIG side mount intercooler that is specific to the Eclipse...so most likely, it'll be a hell of a hack job (Think Supra Side-Mount...look it up here on the forums. I wouldn't elect to install it on mine. The Write up has pictures and, IMO, they don't look pretty).
-Short Throw Shifter...Okay? What Brand?? Reciepts/Records?? Are you sure it's not something like your stock shifter chopped down a few inches, rewelded, reinstalled?? How well does the car shift?? Notchy? Hard? Sloppy?
-Manual Boost Controller...Again, Okay?...Is it a reputable, tried, and true product or some hacked together POS (Think solid block of aluminum, with two holes drilled into it, with nipples on both ends, and an "Adjustable Control Knob" that's siezed into place and looks like it was chewed up with vice grips)??
-255 Walbro Fuel Pump...Have you seen documentation of this?? If not are you going to open up the back seat and get into the tank to see proof??
-2 Inch Springs...Aftermarket or Hacked up Stockers??
-Big Blow Off Valve...WTF..I'm sorry but what exactly does that mean? Does that add like an extra 25hp or something? BIG BOV?? Again, is it a tried and true product?? He may be running a mild boost pressure, but will it hold up in the long run, or be yet another part you'll have to replace?

-New Master Cylinder.......
-New Throw Out Bearing.....
-New Slave Cylinder..............These are pretty big, I'd say. Believe it when you see it! Don't just take his word for it.

-No Boost Leaks..You positive??? Have him test it in front of you. I'd be willing to bet that there is a leak, however small or large, somewhere in the system.
-Removed Power Steering...I'm with everyone else here when they say that this one sucks :notgood:
-Removed A/C....It's a horse a piece. Totally your preference.
-Removed Cruise Control...I like this luxury, but to each his own.
-Speedo Sensor Is Down...This one is near the top of my list of red flags. So, you have no frame of reference for your speed at all? Wiseman/Proven Members, correct me if I'm wrong, but this could go either way, fairly easy to fix/replace or a nightmare waiting to happen?

the 98 GSX has...
124,000 miles:notgood:...The only thing that I'm going to say is, don't judge a book by it's cover. It doesn't mean that the entire car is a pile/bust. Be smart about this.

-i've never bought a car with over 75k miles on it, my driving style would be just to school, work, maybe a 2 hour drive here and there and some highway and stoplight fun...I don't see a reason why a GSX wouldn't be suitable for this. :)I'm biased..Sorry. I'm sure mine will do just fine.

-i dont see myself doing to much work on the cars as i only have 6000 to work with...You mean, for now??? Or, at all, you just want to gas it and go?? I think that you'll find, in time, that if indeed you don't think you'll really do any work on the car, this opinion will change. And fast! These cars are fun!

-oh yeah i live in WI if thats any help.....As am I! West Bend area. Once you find the one that's right for you, hit me up on here. I have yet to get to some of the midwestern meets and I look forward to doing so. Hope to see you there or hear from ya! :thumb:

-i want to make my decision the right one and not regret it later on:...With everything that I have just written about your post, you may think that I'm just a pessimistic troll, but I can assure you, this is not the case. I will admit that I have a bit of a sour taste in my mouth from what happpened when I bought mine, but I'm just trying to give you idea's to think about, things to look out for, things to research before you pull the trigger, etc.

Slow down man! Don't base purchasing one of these cars on a funny superstition or resolution as I believe that will definately brew you up an equation for sorrow and regret.

I'm saying all this because just over a year ago, I was jumping into the DSM world with both feet in and ONE eye open...kind of how it seems with you. You just gotta have one. I found, what is now my GSX, with a "Fully Built Motor and Trans - Immaculate inside and out!" for around the same price point as what you are currently debating on. The guy who was selling is seemed to be nice enough and know about DSM pretty well. He had tons of cars and parts around the "shop" and premesis, and "has worked on these cars for years and years." Well, I went to the guys "Shop" to check the car out and everything seemed to chek out alright. The guy even had the paperwork for all of the parts, that he described, were on the car. So, a week later, we finalize the deal and I'm now the proud and happy owner of a GSX!...atleast at the time I was. Happy, that is.:) I'll keep this part fairly short by saying that after I took delivery, that "paperwork" that he showed me, and that I had requested he leave in the car for me, had mysteriously disappeared. There were several communication discrepencies thereafter as I never got any word back from him about whether or not he "found" the "paperwork" that was now in question.

That was last November. Now, fast forward to this past Septmber when I pulled it out of storage for the first time in 10 months. First try at starting it up...nothing...dead battery..no biggie. I bought a new one and problem solved and she fired right up! It's was time to take it for a drive. And as luck, or in this case the poor skills of a hackjob mechanic, would have it, 15 miles down the road, my trans takes a dump. I estimate, at this point, that I've put 170 miles on the car since I bought it. 170 miles and under NO circumstances ran under ANY amount of boost. At this point, I decide to tear the car completely down and find out what else was "fully built." As it turns out, just about everything that was advertised as being "fully built" was false. None of it was there, worked on, installed, etc.:notgood: And again, he showed me "PROOF!" And by the way, all those examples that I gave above, for some of your parts, were what I found on my car after I really tore it down.

I know this is REALLY long and I apologize for that, however I'm just trying to persuade you to slow down and research this forum for a while, so you know what to look for and what these cars are all about. It takes more then just surfing craigslist, autotrader, or ebay, and reading a MODS LIST, to really feel confident in what you're buying. You can't just take people's words for it these days, and in my case, physical evidence of paperwork. It's sad, I know. The bate and switch of paperwork (I've concluded that the paperwork he showed me was all of the work that was performed on HIS 95' Auto-Xing GSX and he played it off to be the 96' GSX that I purchased) sucks. So, watch out for that! My hope for you is that, this helped open your eyes up to taking a bit of caution when pursuing these cars. If I can somehow help atleast a handful of people avoid a situation like mine, I'll be happy:).

I think that after you've aquired some of the knowledge that floods this forum, you'll be better prepared to purchase the "right" Eclipse for yourself.

Oh! I can't forget...HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!:dsm:

i read every single word of your post... and i appreciate your time in writing all that. everyday i pretty much spend like hours just reading about GSX's and GST's but when buying one, i know sometimes you just gotta take peoples word for it because you just cant pop out the tranny and see whats inside. right now im leaning more towards the gsx but im going to try and test drive both and see which one is willing to drop the price a notch.

as for the midwest meets... i am soo willing to go. here in wisconsin there isnt really an active chapter, i know of WIDSM but they arent active so i've heard. i am also willing to get that chapter up and running with the help of other WIDSM'rs and get some wisconsin meets going on at a track or something, and then an all out midwest meet, man i am getting excited already haha. i wish there was a track or strip here in madison, they would make soo much money, hmm maybe i'll start it haha

happy new years to you too and to everyone else
