how about a 95tsi awd 5sp with 20-40k on a jdm 6bolt, act2100, 14b, thermal cb, 3in high flow cat, 2.5in dp, greddy type-s, uicp, fipk, eibach prokit with newer shocks, external oil cooler,17in motegi trak lites, blitz turbo timer, guages etc, with 90k miles the only problem is you have to hold the shifter in 1st gear, asking 5500 is it worth it

Hey guys,
I'm new to forums and especially new to dsm's (imports in general). I'm looking for a car to replace my current daily driver, an 04 GTP(4 doors, automatic, fwd, boring). I ran into a 1997 Talon TSI AWD online and wanted to get an educated opinion on it.
His mod list:

Evo 3 Big 16g turbo
Walbro 255 fuel pump
New Brakes
Tan Leather
No rust
New Fuel lines and oil lines
4 new tires just havent had time to get them put on

Its a 5spd with 101K miles. I know the 95+dsms had the 7bolt block which was more prone to have crank walk issuses but how much power will a stock long block take? Also, how much power could this puppy make assuming it had other supporting mods like injectors and an safc?

I'm not really looking to go crazy but I know these cars really sh*t 'n' get with a little work and I'd get a kick out of having a 4banger daily driver that could hang with my low 12s 468 Chevelle!:thumb:

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a good car, the Evo 3 16G is the top of the 16g turbos and a good upgrade for the car. I would also look at the price and make sure it isnt outrageous and that it fits your budget. DSMs aren't cheap cars to mod and keep up on. I think if the price is right it would be a good toy to invest in. The stock internals on the 7 bolt is good for about 400hp at the max (IMO).

I would check the car for crankwalk. If it is ok don't not buy it just because it has a 7 bolt. The whole crankwalk issue has been blown out of proportion in my opinion.

If there is any doubt about the last time it was done, do a timing belt. Bent valves will ruin your day. Buy an aftermarket boost gage and a fuel pressure regulator if the car doesn't already have them.

Its all a luck thing..7 bolt 2g's get the crank walk and the 6 bolt 1g's have a weak transmission so go figure. The set up looks nice but i would make sure the maintnance has been done on the car such as timing belt, water pump and other. With the proper tunning and being on the safe side the engine will be able to hold 350-375 wiht no problem. Check the compression on all the pistons and make sure they are astill pushing hard, because if its 130 psi or lower all the way across then you gona need a rebuild. Good Luck.

There have been less than 10% of claims of crankwalk in all 2G DSM Models. 1 guy had a bearing spin and then another and another and now it's a massive problem that everyone says is such a big deal. The crank walk issue has been around for a very long time and did not just appear one day because of the 95-97 4g63 engine. Not to mention I believe it was less than 2% of all crankwalked engines reported to Diamond Star had less than 150,000 miles on the engine.

It wasn't that big of a deal to Diamond Star or else there would have been a recall. They felt that 10% of all 2G DSMs suffering from a thrust bearing failure wasnt that big of a deal, especially with them having such high miles. So people who say "eww 7 bolt those crankwalk" or "do a 6 bolt swap, the 7 bolts "walk"" just need to get a clue and stop spreading the whole crankwalk issue.

I'm sure that more than 80% of the people on this site who claim their engine "walked" just spun a bearing, or f'd their engine up by using it in a retarded way and just wanted a way to push off the blame.

How does one check for crank walk? I know the sound of a spun bearing from dealing with my chevelle and rod knock is obvious but crank walk is new to me.

Are there anymore mods done to the car and what is the price?

He's asking 5k, but I've never given someone what they wanted for a car. Also he replied to my email stating that the injectors and clutch are stock and the tranny feels fine, other than that I'm guessing its all stock.

Yeah I'm gonna compression test it when I go see it and if I buy it I'll do a new belt, plugs/wires and fluids. One thing though, he says the injectors are stock so could they even support the power the Evo III turbo can produce?

Off topic and kind of funny, I'm 6'5 and I'm thinking I'll need a no frills racing seat just so I can pack myself in this thing like a kirkey racing seatKirkey Racing - Browse Products. No bolsters or pads and mounted as low as possible. Just wondering how tall some of you DSM guys are.

My brother is looking a a 1g 4g63t and we are wanting know what a good starting price would be. Also the car may need a little work(clutch or any thing small) it may need work.
I would help him more by knowing what is fair for those cars, I would more likly over pay for one. Thanks if i get any help.

I would say they're usually around from $1000 to $1500 maybe cheaper, if they're in decent sent shape, I've gotten my 93 talon awd for $800 it needed the usual tune up and a battery and some body dents, good luck on you guy's buy!

Just wanted to a fair price on a 1g. There is a little street value to some cars because of the type it is. We dont care on its condition( NOT TOTALED) good or slightly bad. I check kkb alight for prices, but the person selling wants way to much.

Yeah the mod list on the car, condition of the body, and milage play a big roll in how much it costs.

I paid 2200 for my 92 Laser. It had 138K on it, a new head and timing belt, Dog Box Racing tranny, ACT 2600, turboback, MBC, gauges, 2gmaf, intake, KYBs with Eibach springs. All it needed was new front rotors. I figured it was worth it cause the tranny is $1200 anyways

You are just looking to see if the crank can move axially in the main bearings. When crankwalk is bad you can see it by eye. When it is out of spec but not horrible it is more difficult.

click on dsm, engine, crankwalk - possible fix (at the bottom), at the top of that horror story under 12/18/01 are some links on how to check

A dial indicator between the frame and crank pulley is the easiest way to check. Set up the indicator and carefully pry the crank pully toward the oilpan. Then have someone push the clutch and observe how far the crank moves.

Like the others said. Don't freak out about this.
