I'm having trouble getting this specification correct when I'm doing my timing belt. It's supposed to be between 3.8 and 4.5mm. I'm following all of the steps on VFAQ and I'm not doing anything wrong. Or maybe I am but at least I don't think that I am. The rod falls out of spec meaning that it is protruding too far. Has anyone encountered this problem before? I keep repeating the necessary steps but I'm not seeing any changes. The belt is nice and taught and turns over by hand no problem. I've turned it over and lined up the timing marks a few times and it's not skipping or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just use the grenade pin method. Set the tension properly, pull the pin and rotate the motor over a few times and then line the marks back up. Wait 15 minutes and if you tensioned the eccentric pulley properly the grenade pin will fit right back into the tensioner.

Thats what i did when i first did mine pulled pin out rotated a few times, then fired her up no problems not bad for first timer my first big thing back in 2000.

If the rod is coming out too far then you don't have the eccentric pulley tight enough. Put the pin back in and tighten it up a little more. You may have to repeat this several times before you get it right. With some practice you get a feel for it.
