Recently picked up a TD06 17C from a gmc typhoon/syclone for free. Aside from being a little crusty it feels awesome absolutely no shaft play. I was thinking about buying a TD06SL2 turbine wheel and a 7cm dsm housing for it to throw in my Conquest. I've also got a evo3 wastegate I could modify to fit. Would it be worthwhile to build such a thing? Not looking for a huge amount of power, just a punchy street turbo. Or should I just stick with the TD05H 20G that's already in the car?

I'm aware. But would the 17c comp wheel with a nine blade sl2 turbine potentially spool quicker or at least similar to the 05H 20g? Like I said not looking for what makes the most power here. I like the compressor housing better on the typhoon turbo because I wont have to fabricate a goofy flanged intercooler pipe

Those flat-backed "B" and "C" compressors without staggered blades were designed for like 10-12psi, just so you're aware. This is a horrible idea...but not as horrible as how steep the angle is on the bearing housing of that knockoff 20G.

Yikes, you must be fun at parties. First off, I’m clearly in the mock-up stage of installing the turbo. Notice how nothing is currently connected to the bearing housing? I wasn’t planning on leaving it like that. Second, I never claimed the turbo was genuine. Why would I spend $1000+ for a MHI unit that I’m not even sure was going to work for my RWD application. Also, that 10-12psi of pressure is exactly what I was planning on operating the hypothetical 17c at, with the OE typhoon wastegate actuator. My original question was how the two would compare, specificlly in spooling characteristics, which you have failed to answer.

I see a coolant line visible and a 10AN drain line attached...I apologize that my x-ray glasses weren't on to see if they were actually connected to anything.

Indeed you never claimed the turbo to be Genuine...also never stated what your intended goals were so how would any of us know what would be the best choice for you. All I have to work with is "punchy street turbo" which would eliminate anything larger than a TD05H turbine in my eyes. Beyond that, I'm terrible at guessing.


So apparently you're asking if pairing a larger turbine to a compressor that doesn't need that much turbine flow would be a wise idea, and then again asking for specific spool characteristics from this abortion of combining a 30-year-old compressor to a modern turbine then running it at stock boost as if someone out there in DSM world has done this before.

As stated above I'm not going to pretend to be a good guesser to give you the answer you're looking for...but I am curious why you overlooked the obvious solution of putting a TD05H turbine on the 17C and run it in the knockoff 20G turbine housing at whatever boost you're planning to run (stock Sy/Ty actuators are .5 bar or a shade over 7psi). If the TD05H turbine can handle a 52.5mm 20G I'm sure it will have no trouble with a 48.5mm 17C, and this would save buying another turbine housing or getting this one machined to work with a larger turbine that you'd never put to use anyway. Don't forget to weld the flapper bushing in place and port the wastegate hole if you want to have any chance at controlling boost.

EDIT: Also, don't try to use the TD05H turbine from the Chinese 20G or you'll be in for a big surprise as the shafts are nowhere near being the same spec.

I was laughing my ass off reading Justin tearing apart the vague question. That was a riot.

But anything he says about a turbo you should definitely listen.
Don't take it personally, he's been doing this a little while and probably hates when people don't give much information to make his job easier.

On a side note. Nice conquest. Needs more pics tho in your build thread. We love pictures.
