So I have a transmission in limp mode or so it would seem only have 3rd gear and reverse . It's a 91 talon awd, I read how to check the codes and did so but it just kept pulsing meaning according to the code pages everything is well or so it would seem. It does not go on to say anything about limp mode with no codes.

So what could it be. The clutch packs seem to be in good shape and once I ease into 2500 it will take off right To 60 mph with no overdrive .

So with no codes and my multi meter bouncing back n forth consistently sugesting no tcu codes can the tcu still be bad ? What are some other things I can check ?

Thanks a lot in advance

That is very interesting but I wouldn't even know we're to start on doing something like that do you have a write up on it ?

There is a write up on it.You will have a pm in a couple minutes. It's a secret hiddin in plain site.

Or replace the tcu, or there is an already built shift box I would reccomend.

Essentially your running power wires that are switched to the 2 shift solenoids.

Search blue wire mod, build your own shift box, thats how I found my info to do it.

I will check that out for sure. But in the mean time anyone have any thoughts on my orrigional post. I have a tcu on order that's gonna cost me a pretty penny but if it's possible that it could be something other them the tcu or transmission causing limp mode thatwould be great for me to to know so i can trouble shoot like tps adjustment for example

If it has a heart beat it's not dead be happy it's not putting out a constant voltage... . YET

No voltage or always 12v indicates a dead TCU causing limp mode... . As I'm sure your aware.

Are you sure it's not give any codes? what is the MD # on the TCU?
Post up a pic of the board if it's not shot it would be a very good Idea to do a once over.

As when the Tcu caps leak you have a 50/50 chance of feeding 12v to chips that have a max voltage rating of about half that...

It isn't very good for their health needless to say and about half of the TCUs that have caps leak are permanently fried because of this The TCUs shared the same bad 47uF capacitors found in the 1G ECUs. The only difference is that those in the ECU don't usually cause the 5v power rail to go to 12v when they go bad like the design of the TCU does.

And as you have found out TCU are very vehicle specific and $$$ an not the easiest to find unless you know a lot of people or are lucky with out spending a fair amount of money.

Do you have a palm? PM me if so I could help you out with checking the codes a bit easier... .

Okay so it's confirmed the main cap has puked all over the board. I will post pictures. Are these fixable like it I took it to an electronics repair and told them to clean the board and replace that cap would it work again?

heres the best pics i could get from my iphone enjoy the carnage !!!! :hellyeah:

It may or may not work after the PCB is cleaned up and the capacitor replaced. The electrolyte may have eaten through some of the traces. The biggest thing to worry about is excessive output voltage to the ICs, which damages them.

You can test the output voltage from the power transistor as described here, but I wouldn't advise doing so until some repairs have been done:

I just went through the same thing with my project car's TCU. I cleaned the board, removed and replaced the cap, and still tested almost 7v from the transistor. I was hoping to bring it back to life, but it didn't happen.

Got reman tcu for 300 still in limp mode with no codes. Tranny fluid is clean any ideas ? I need this fixed ASAP
