Hello, I am trying to figure out what's wrong with my Tsi Automatic Talon. I have googled and youtube-ed everything I could think of, as well as read a few similar sounding threads on here and I'm still unsure.
My car has been shifting a little rough since I got it six months ago (we knew it needed work and planned on spending some tax return on it. Needed immediate transport as my old carwas totaled), apon accelleration it would sometimes shudder and once in a while it would lurch or lag(?) When slowing down. It was not too bad though.
For the past month or so it has gotten worse. It has been taking time to get up to speed or shift over to the next gear, the idle is very high, and generally running rough. The check engine light also came on about 2 months ago.
Additionally, my serpentine belt started squeeling apon ignition for a few minutes but then it would go away. Perhaps the pully/tentioner?
Finally, for the past week I have noticed a strange smell from exhaust and heat vents. I can't quite describe it, a musky kind of faint burning smell or something. Not a strong smell but I notice it now and then.
A loose metal on metal scraping/grinding sound started a day or two ago, but only for a second or two once in a while. Then last night I was in a drive through and all of a sudden that scraping sound became constant and much louder. Its a rythmic scraping/grinding under hood, sounds terrible, and doesn't go away after restarting. I parked it immediately. Please help!

As for the high idle and running rough, sounds like a post throttle body vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum lines and hoses going to the intake manifold, make sure they are all hooked up!

Everything else is tough to diagnose without actually being there..

Also get that CEL scanned and let us know what the codes are!

I would check for coolant leaks for the smell, and check your all your fluid levels. especially the transmission, and check to see if the trans fluid looks and smells burnt. If so you could be looking at some fairly costly issues.

Check to see if your OBD-2 or not, if i remember correctly misubishi started putting OBD-2 in mid year in 95, if they did you can get the cel read at any autozone or other parts store that does free scans.

As for the scraping sound, i would bet one of your pulleys is on its way out, run it at idle for a little bit and see if you can localize the sound, break the engine bay up into 4-6 parts and try to localize it to a small section where its at its loudest, that will help pinpoint what it could be.

definitely look at your trans fluid level and condition. When was the last time the transmission was flushed? Take a picture of the fluid that is on the dipstick so we can have a look. if it is a dark brown or chunky, you are having a bad day my friend. metal on metal sounds are never a good thing but if you are lucky it could just be something dumb like a broken /bent/ damaged flex plate...

I personally never flush auto transmissions, i always drain and fill.

I've heard, and personally witnessed horror stories from having an auto transmission flushed. Could have been the tranny was bad before hand, but with as many similar experiences as i've seen, i'd rather not take the chance.

Theirs nothing wrong with flushing a transmission as long as the trans has been maintained. Is it a manual or 5spd.

Manual and 5 speed are the same thing. OP's transmission is auto.

I have seen automatic vehicles with under 50K miles have there transmissions flushed and days later suddenly develop issues shifting, slipping, not going into gear, etc.

Didn't realize i worded it that way. Must have been a fluke than because i have done several and never had any issues. The cel more than likely has something to do with tbe transmission shuddering. It sounds as if you have pressure issue of some sort. Scanning tbe vehicle will let you know exactly the problem. Im actually replacing a govenor and a preasure switch in a jeep due to transmission shutter and a p1756 cel.

Thank you all for your suggestions! Turns out it was actually the AC compressor plates rubbing together. I never would have guessed. My AC compressor is, for some reason, partially engaging when it shouldn't be. Since its not fully engaging though, that's causing the plates and such to be loose while its running so its making that metal scraping sound. Unfortunately a new compressor is arund 300 so I'm thinking ill just deal with it for a while, other stuff needs tending to before my AC. Oh and the smell is the AC cluch burning I suppose.

You need to at least remove the ac from the system then, if the clutch is engaging and burning, eventually it will lock up and snap the belt.

I got a new compressor for my N/T from the junkyard for $30 and it works great :thumb:
