Ok... I'm only 17, so I don't make a lot of money, and my parents aren't rich, so here we go.

I've always wanted a second gen dsm, but I've been stuck with a 1st. Not that there is nothing wrong with that, but I'm still young, and I want my car to look really good too.

I know I want a Turbocharged DSM..... and i KNOW I want AWD.

So that gives me to choices... TSI awd or GSX.

Well, i dont have the cash to buy either of those... so i was wondering if anyone would think buying a salvage car would be a good idea.

I know a lot of Mechanics, and they are my friends, so that should help.... Is there any kind of damages i should watch out for? Like things that wouldnt be worth it? And maybe things that are no problem to fix, and i should look for.

Thanks everyone
-Alex

Alright the car is a 95 eagle talon tsi awd with 157k miles and a body kit (suprisingly not that bad). Anyways I have been looking for a eagle talon project car for a while now and so far this has been the best bet so far. I already have a new truck for a daily driver and I dont plan to have my project finished for quite sometime so having it under repair for a while doesnt bother me a bit and I will be doing most of the work myself. Alright well the car was nailed in the rear and is considered a salvaged title. The car still runs but is still damaged from the accident. Im going to get some more info tomorrow but from what I have said so far what do u think would be a good price to offer considering it is still wrecked and everything? Thanks ahead of time for any helpful info u have.

I was under the impresssion that a vehicle with a salvage title can only be used for parts and couldn't be issued a regular title ever again, even if it's repaired/restored to a drivable condition.

im trying to get some better pictures of the wrecked cars and try to post them tomorrow afternoon. Also you can get plates for a salvaged car but its resell value is zero. I dont really plan to sell it for a long time but it is just going to be the weekend race car that i could still drive on the streets. Im just trying to think what a good price might be for one of these cars as a salvaged title. Also my friend has a salvaged car and he has been able to get plates and everything. It just has to pass inspection I guess.

Unless you're a mechanic type, or have pals that are, I'd say to not bother with things over 125K. Unmodified DSMs seem good for 175-200K, but finding one that's never been zoomed-out is getting more and more a rare event as they keep getting cheaper. The dream car is granddad's, but pretty much in the way Nikki Cox is a dream date. And with about equal odds.

Another consideration is the timing belts, which have a life of 60K. If you're at a near-multiple of that, and it's not been done, it's time. Water pumps are good for about 100K, so you do them with the second belt.

Salvage title usually means the car's back from the dead. This can be a real situation where it's been taken from a junker and re-assembled (from two or more cars in the worst cases), or it can be something harmless like a recovered stolen that the owner's insurance company totalled-out despite minor damage. It destroys the value of a car by a good 50-60% either way, and often makes it _very_ hard to re-sell. If you're going to drive it until it's absolutely dead, and you can CONFIRM why it was given a salvage, you can sometimes get a steal.

Then again, you can buy grandpa's car, and have it crankwalk later that week. Just like people with brand-new cars can find out the manufacturer's having to pull them all back in for a bum transmission or the like.

fantastic reply couldn't be said any better :thumb:

I would say the best thing to do is get the salvage car and strip it for parts. Insurance is a pain to deal with with a salvage title.

Some states allow you to clear a salvage title with an inspection, some do not. Even then, it will be in the history and ins will be able to find it. You can also do some transfering between states and get them cleared, which unsavory dealerships do.

Your best bet, if you are down on cash, is to make up for it with labor. Find a wrecked GSX and gut it for the AWD, harness, and turbo motor. A lot of work? Of course, but you don't have alot of money, and you gotta have one or the other to go fast.:thumb:

There's a car I'm looking at and I'm wondering that since it was from a cop shop as a stolen vehicle, is there a way to clean the title up from being salvaged or anything to being clean again? Anyway to make the title clean basically. Thanks to anyone who can possibly help. I'm mainly concerned if Nebraska could fix that title or not.

It might be different in MB but I dont know of anyway and I have lived in three states with legal stuff in four and have never found or heard of a way to "fix" a savaled title.

No way to clean a title in nebraska, unless you know a professional criminal and want to face possible felony charges. Ive heard the only legit place you can do that is in florida. Either way to do such a thing is total BS. Just take before and after pics to show the original damage and price the car accordingly.
