So last fall my brother dropped in a used motor in his gvr4 with new gaskets, timing components, etc. It started it up and all but needed some tweeking. Fast forward about 3 weeks. The car no longer started and him and his buddy undid the timing belt and some how concluded the crank sprocket was bad and removed it. I wasn't around when all this was done so i couldn't verify if they lined up all markers and made sure it was TDC but I was told everything was done.

Upon researching best way to bolt on a new sprocket on tuners we put the timing belt back on while I made sure the cams didn't move and my brother torque down the sprocket/bolt. In the couple of attempts we did the sprocket slipped off the belt and turned. That feeling didn't feel right so I left it at that. I'm hoping we didn't screw anything up and I suspect the best thing to do now is take everything apart, inspect, and redo his timing.

thoughts?

Spark plugs were removed for the process. I'm really hoping everything was lined up prior to them taking the TB off. Now trying to torque down the crank bolt and having the crank sprocket slip off the TB a few teeth I just hope i can re align the crank mark without damaging the pistons or valves.

As long as you turn the engine by hand you should be fine. If you are really worried about it, take off the valve cover and loosen the cam caps. That'll loosen the cams up so they aren't pushing on any valves so the valves will all be closed. Granted, doing that will make it impossible to line up your timing marks but you'll be able to get them really close. Then tighten the cam caps back down and make the minor adjustaments to get the marks to line up. Here's a timing belt guide...

Thanks.

I've done my timing belt job on my talon a few times now. I'm no expert but i can do it. I've always read that the crank should never be turned if the TB is not on so that's raising flags as I think about this.

Put a screw driver in the #1 cylinder and rotate the crank a bit using a ratchet/wrench and set the piston so it's not at TDC, but half way down. Shouldn't matter which way you rotate the crank to acheive this but rotate it in the direction that requires the least amount of rotating. Putting the #1 piston half way down will mean that all the pistons are halfway down. So there's no risk of them hitting your valves. Then line up your cams and oil pump (if you haven't eliminated the balance shafts), and turn the crank to get the timing marks lined up in which ever direction that requires the least amount of rotating to achieve this. Then put the belt on.

I woudlnt worry its not hard to do. Just always spin motor manually before starting to be sure nothing binds you will feel it but will not damage anything that way you know when you fire it up you good to go.
