hey guys, im having some issues with my turbo i think. my 99 gst keeps bogging down at around 4k when the turbo spools. Ive had the car for 3 years and when I got it ran amazingly but then it sat for 3 years in a body shop and now it runs great up to 3500k but then bogs down and black smoke comes out the back. i posted some pics of the motor below...

i bought the car from a guy in colorado with all the motor work done, then i did all the body work and it took 3 years to complete. i was told  , the car had over 300hp and this list of mods on motor:
-t3/t4 garret turbo
-apexi intercooler system
-custom 3in downpipe
-high pressure fuel pump
-act stage II clutch
-1g bov
-k&n filter, use to have a red extreme filter but it was filthy so got the k&n
-there was something else too but I never got the complete mod list

ive had the car on ebay for awhile now, but its getting to low of a price to sale so im deciding to fix it first then sell it. it will be easier to sale that way. any help or suggestions on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I live in TN and no one will work on this car around here.

It's pretty clear from your post that you know very little about these cars mechanically. No one's gonna be able to give you answers, especially with such a vague description. What injectors does it have? What's being used for tuning? I'd guess that's where your problem lies.

As Steve mentions, not alot of info to go on here.

But a car sitting for three years will obviously need some maintenance prior to running: Oil/filter, coolant flush, new plugs, drain gas tank / lines, replace fuel filter, clean injectors.

My thoughts are that the gas got funky from sitting so long and crapped up your fuel system and/or is just not fit to combust well. An intake or intercooler pipe coupler could also be loose.

Do you have any CELs?

I see that you posted to the Regional Forum also, so hopefully someone nearby chimes in to help out as well :dsm:

Actually, I know a lot about these cars its my second one, just not about the motor which is why I ask the questions...I dont have a complete mod list of the motor so I'm not sure what injectors it has. I do have dsmlink for tuning tho.

When I first got the car back from the shop, it was boggin down from start. Then one of my friends looked at it and pulled out a plug that was in the small black rubber pipe that was going to the 1g bov from the intake pipe and it started running great up to around 4k. I wish I could describe it better but I dont know motors that well which is why I bought the car with the motor already done up a little. I wish I could desribe it better. The car literally sat for 3 years with barely being started...

Yea im really sorry guys wish I new a little more. When I got the car back it had no gas, and it did have alot of problems at the shop with the plugs having to be replaced when he would try to start it everytime. Now it starts up fine though everytime. I havent had a new oil filter, coolant flushed, or gas lines drained, fuel filter replaces, or the injectors cleaned. Maybe I should do that and see what happens. If I can ever find someone to work on the thing. No one will touch it because its all aftermarket...

That was your first mistake. Buying a car that's already been modded by someone else can be enough of a headache if you have a good understanding of the engine/drivetrain/ECU tuning end of things, let alone if you don't know anything about it.

I'll venture a guess that since you have DSMlink and the car sat so long, the battery has died or been disconnected at some point during that time. If that's the case, DSMlink will default back to it's original settings which would likely mean it's going back to stock 450cc injector settings (among other things) and causing your issues.

If you have a copy of a datalog from when the car ran right, you should be able to compare and reload the data to the ECU. If not, you're going to have to either learn how to use DSMlink or at least figure out what injectors you have so that someone on the forums can guide you.

dammit you beat me to it. I was going to say its the config in DSMlink also.

You need to get he car tuned by someone that knows what they are doing (no offense)

Also that doesn't look like a T3/T4 turbo. You would need a new exhaust manifold to run that turbo and it looks like you have the stock exhaust manifold shield on.

So either thats an old picture, or you got scammed.

I am NOT a body mods guy but i have to say, your car looks great. Got a picture of the rear?

And yes, you probably have either a boost leak or you need to set the correct settings in dsmlink.

im so confused...
but thats what i get for not knowing much about motor...but anyways...
The car has definitely died several times and the battery has been disconnected almost the whole time it was in the shop. im hoping when i go home this wkd i will be able to find an old datalog from the dsmlink. where would be a good place to look..bash away =)

I made an apt with a mitsu dealer yesterday for Tuesday so hopefully they can help pin point a problem...I just hope its nothing crazy expensive bc I really need to sell this bad boy.

If anyone close to Tullahoma, TN would be able to come help me tune this or show me how to use the dsmlink properly it would be amazing and I would pay for your gas over!

So is it a t3/t4 turbo? It says garret on the side...I was looking at pics of the t3/t4 and it looks just like it..I also remember the guy saying something about fuel injectors, and a custom made "something" on the motor besides the 3in downpipe. Again it was 3 yrs ago and I wasnt even the one who dealt with the guy...

thanks for all the opinions guys

oh and olmytsi here is a pic of rear...

i don't think a dealer is going to help you. You need a preformance shop that knows more about tuning. You've got to realize everything you have is aftermarket.

If a dealer knows how to work DSMlink i'll be suprised.

Have you visited the DSMLink forums? Couple guys I found in THIS THREAD from TN :dsm:

man I cant register on that thread to view it :(

i didnt think a dealer would be able to help much thats why i waited so long to set up a apt...but its my last hope bc there are no performance shops around here anymore that im aware of. they all disappeared throughout those 3 years...

does anyone know of one around Tennessee?? Middle Tennessee????
