Ladysmith,
Ok, so I finally got my 1ga AWD (with ABS) Talon, and she's a beauty.

I'm swapping the engine out of my 91 turbo laser and I'll be removing the AC, CC, and ABS in the process.

I know I basically just need to swap over all the brake components from the Laser, and I don't feel there's will be problem there, but I'm wondering if I can swap over the hubs and rotors/pads etc from my FWD laser onto my AWD with ABS.

I've heard that the ABS hubs are a PITA, especially with broken wheel studs, which the talon has one of, plus all the rotors are worn and rusted to shit. So are the rotor sizes and caliper and pad sizes all the same for the FWD and AWD, and would I stil have equivilant breaking using all my FWD stuff on my AWD?

Oh and I was wondering, with removing the AC, all that is is cold air right, so I can removing the pump and all the crap, and keep my heater core and heat so I can have defrost etc?

Thanks,

Wayne

I'm not sure witch car has ABS from your post But,
If the talon is non-abs you can use the lazer disks and calipers just don't swap any of the abs crap. This is a good time to do the Bearings and ball joints. When you have the new bearings pressed in, remove the abs system from the inside of the rotors. And you CAN press in new ball joints into the control arms. The dealership Only Sells the WHOLE control arm w/new ball joints, Very expensive.

And No thats not just cold air ITS FREON. ITS ALSO highly illegal to vent into the atmosphere! Take it Mechanic to recover it PROPERLY!

Lol, I meant all the AC does is blow cold air in your face, right? I know it's freon, I think it's already been vented as well. But what I meant is the "AC" is just the little button with two different stages on it right? That keeps the cockpit air at a certain temp, or something like that, or is it also used when I turn the temperature nob too cold? Either way, by removing the AC pump and keeping the heater core and vents to the defrost, I can keep the defrost, remove my center vents and knobs for gauges, and just leave it set on defrost? Cause that's all I'd ever need.

And sorry, the talon has the ABS, i'll change that in there, though I thought all AWD's has ABS? but oh well.

Thanks for the reply tho, I'll get around to ball joints etc when i have more money, I have access to a full shop through college so the convenience is always there.

Just need to know the above, and if the brake components etc are the same on fwd and awd, I'm thinking the rear pads/calipers might be superior on the AWD?

Thanks

Wayne

Ok, another Q, I searched but only found inconclusive threads that didn't get answered from 3 years ago.

I'm pretty sure dropping my FWD engine into my AWD rolling chassis, should be pretty straight foward, but in doing my search I read the the FWD flywheel is bigger then the AWD one, so I need to buy a flywheel now too? Is there anytrhing else from an FWD that wont work on my AWD.

Oh, and is there any chance that a FWD bellhousing is the same as an AWD bellhousing.....
Cause the tranny I got for free with the car has a cracked bellhousing.

Sorry for the now 4 different questions in this thread.... :coy: But I'll be starting the swap right after I rebuild the AWD tranny, so, pretty soon LOL.

Thanks

Wayne

i have a 1990 eagle talon tsi awd with a "frozen ac compressor" and i can still defrost the front windsheild, (i think the reason why i cant defrost the back is because the seal on the hatch is missing a large portion, so i get air from the outside comming in, and i can hear stuff from outside, and smell my exaust while im driving sometimes...) you should be able to defrost without that, cuz i can somewhat...

Thank you very much.

I have looked into it a little more, and it appears that swapping the engine from my 91 FWD turbo laser into the 91 AWD talon shell I bought isn't quite as straight foward as I thought, still very easy but not a direct drop in.

The AWD talon has a 2.5 inch exhaust up to the DP on it, so exhaust is fine, I have an AWD tranny that need a rebuild and a new bellhousing, so thats fine. So i think all I need now is an AWD 6 bolt flywheel, AND I need to know if I can use all my mounts from my FWD on the AWD, or which ones I can or can't use, I'll have to check which mounts the shell came with tomorrow, im not sure, I think maybe 1 or 2.

Anyone who could clear some of these things up for me? Oh and whether or not I can swap the entire rotor hub assemblies over to eliminate the ABS, and cuz the rotors on the AWD are rusted to shit.

Oh and I read that I can use the passenger side axle from the FWD on the AWD, cuz the AWD didn't come with any front ones.

Thanks

Wayne
