Recently received a 92 eclipse w/ the 1.8 non-turbo. The motor ran but it had bad headgasket, so I decided to buy a whole new motor from a reputable junkyard. I tried starting it and all it does is backfire. There is spark. And it cranks over, but no start. I double checked the wiring harness, everythings plugged in. Btw, the oil pressure reading reads high all the way to the right, but this might be because the oil pressure sending unit clip has oil all over it. Any Suggestions???

sounds like your distributor is flipped 180 degrees. that would cause it to fire the wrong cylinder at the wrong time. check your shop manual. chiltons has some good info on 1.8 distributors, IIRC.

Hmm, How could it be flipped 180 degrees? There's only one bolt to hold it on...So you couldn't really install it upside down...I pulled the spark plugs and they have some oil on the tips after cranking a few times, not sure if this is normal. Any other suggestions?

Normal? Why would having oil in the cylinders be normal? Fuel, air, and spark are all you want in there.

Go to this site it will help you out w/ your ingition timing. But if your CAS is 180degrees out, and that's what it sound like. You have to take the CAS off the block and turn the knob in the middle 180degrees and then put it back in.

Make sure the rotor is pointing to where the No. 1 runner originates inside the cap, if equipped, and not where the No. 1 ignition wire plugs into the cap.

I am assuming you swapped one 1.8 motor for another, not a 2.0.

Thanks for the replys, figured it out... there's a little dot on the end of the distributor spindle that facing the wrong direction, pulled the dizzy out and rotated it and it fired right up. I'm used to Hondas where dizzy only goes on one way. However, the oil pressure gauge still reads high (all the way to the right) I'm figuring the oil pressure sending unit for the gauge is broken
