A friend of mine is wanting to sell his 500w sub for $40, brand new. I dont mind but how would the sub work without an amp?

Do I need an amp to run a sub, and what would happen if I dont get an amp?

Also, how do I wire up the sub to the car?

If you dont have a clue, seek help or you can fry or damage something.
Spend some money on the amp. You pay for what you get.
Also, recommend looking into getting an Audiocontrol preamp. Makes a huge difference. You can find some on Ebay.

Hey

You seem pretty new to car audio, I recommend doing some research and checking out Car Audio Forum - CarAudio.com

They also have a good classifieds section where you can buy quality used equipment, just make sure you research the seller and product so you don't get ripped off.

I wouldn't recommend running a sub with out an amp.

Do some research and when they say "500 watts" that usually means the peak power of the sub, but in this case i could be wrong considering i don't know what sub it is. Look at the links the other guys posted and if you have any friends who are smart in that area, have them help you with the install.
