Hello,
I know its irritating seeing duplicate topics but I have searched the forums and am having a hard time with diagnosing my car as others have different scenarios that do not sound like my issue. I apologize in advance. I have a 1997 GST that I purchased from a mechanics shop. The owner could not float the bill and surrendered the car. 7 years later I bought it from the mechanic. He gave me the work order on everything that was done: Timing belt, water pump, tensioner, head gasket, resurfaced head, and new garrett t25 turbo, oil change, and coolant flush. It was throwing an EVAP code p0446 so I have not registered the car, it has been sitting in my driveway while I try and chase down the problem. I will replace a part, reset ecu, and test drive around the block to see if the light comes back. I noticed I have a knock that sounds like its coming from the top end. Took a video and have stopped running it. The oil is very healthy looking, not black, no glitter, no metal shavings, and the car has plenty of power, idles smooth with no other indication that there is a problem. The knock is not very loud and can barely hear it while driving, although I haven't drove this car far enough to really get an idea of what I'm dealing with. Before taking the video, I pulled the spark plug wires one at a time to see if the noise disappears on a particular cylinder when unplugged, noise is still present when I test each cylinder. My thoughts before I tear into the motor could be: The mechanic could have the timing a tooth off, pre detention from 7 year old gas "I filled with 91 before taking it home with 1/4 tank of old gas though", dryed lifters and valve seals from sitting to long, I pressure washed the motor carefully but could this affect the CAS retarding timing? The warm compression is in good shape on all cylinders.
