Alright so just got my car back from the shop where they installed a 6 puck clutch and a used transmission that i bought. I know the tranny had bad second gear synchros, but thats not my problem. My problem is that I first lost 4th gear after about 20 minutes of driving. It just would not go in, as if there was a wall stopping it WTF. Now i just got back from driving it and i put it in first and now it refuses to budge out of it. It WILL go into a nuetral like state( it feels weird like its on the verge of first and nuetral) but it wont move side-to-side or into any other gear!!! Any one have any ideas??? T.O bearing is also brand new.

quick update: I got in my car this morning and after about 30 seconds of trying to shift it went into all the gears perfectly. I drove to my work ( which is only a mile away) with no problems. As i was driving around the parking lot it locked up in first gear and nuetral again with ZERO wiggle room to shift. S o i put in first then pulled it out and i was able to shift through all my gears. I got locked out of 4th though for some reason( that is very reoccuring ) ......Any ideas? shift linkage or something in my tranny? when it locked up last night i couldnt shift with the car off.

If you can't get it "out" of gear it could be in the linkage or the trans. Next time, remove the cables from the trans and try to shift through the arms on the trans. If it still won't move and appears frozen you could very well have problems inside the trans. You first are going to have to isolate the area by the above suggestion. I've seen the cables go bad, but have seen more transmissions go bad. Usually due to lack of lubricant. Always check your trans fluid when you are changing oil. More so if you see any kind of transmission leak.

Good Luck

it is possible its linkage, but not very likely since at times it shifts fine. chances are its an internal problem

Damn thats what i was afraid of....so basically i should disconnect the cables and try to shift it manually on the tranny? Any ideas as to why it would keep me locked out of fourth 99.9% of the time?

So i just found out the tranny had been sitting for a month.. most likely without gear oil in it too...rust perhaps? i dunno if a months long enough for rust to form on the inside, but i have heard tranny rails locking up from rust. any thoughts to this?

Usually when fourth gear is your problem it turns out your input shaft bearing is failing which causes mis alignment on the input shaft/output shaft. Fourth gear being directly linking the input to the output shaft and bypassing the counter shaft. That will cost some bucks depending on how long you let it go on before you decide to repair.

You likely will be pulling the trans down and apart.

Good Luck

So if i didnt fix it what would be the turnout? i dont use fourth because it is really pretty much locked out 100% of the time. But i do get locked up everyonce in awhile in other gears, i.e. it goes in but doesnt go come out. any thoughts to this? what am i lookin at for a ballpark price range?

Well, as in all domino effects, it will transfer to the other gears. Usually 3rd is the next to go and the rest later on. If you're going to do that, I would purchase another transmission. Sooner or later it will come to that.

Damn i just bought that transmission too  How long would guess to the best of your knowledge do i have befor i lose third too..? just a guess. Because i know if i lose third im pretty much srewed. Impossible to go from second to 5th and not have it bogg down rediculously.:toobad:
