stripped transmission holes

so i got my trans in my 1g awd last night.
And now the bolts that go through the transfer case to the trans wont catch and i really dont want to drop the trans again it took 4 people to get it in last night..
can i tap the bolt holes with the trans in the car? like if i just take the transfer case off.
any ideas would be great

Do it right and just be done. Pull the trans back out, drill the holes, tap the holes, insert helicoils, reinstall trans. You can pick up helicoil kits from your local autoparts store. Id recommend NAPA. To find the sizing, shoot shep an email or call and he will get right back with you usually within a day! I completely understand that this way is pry gonna be a hassel for ya but youll be glad you did it right, when you have it done. Why does it take 4 people to put in a trans

You can easily pull the trans yourself. The best way for one person to do it is to just disconnect everything, jack up the car and use a cherry picker to lower the transmission onto the ground and just pull it out. It's quite simple and very effective. Pulling it through the top is way too much of a hassle.
