Driving back from dropping my friend off at the airport this morning at 4 a.m., and on my way to work. Going around the off ramp and hit the gas 20% to merge then take it out of gear for a red light and the car dies. Try to start it and it just sounds like the starter is spinning and nothing. Stick my leg out the door and roll the car back to the the clutch grab and rock the engine (thinking the starter is on the fritz. Nothing!

Had to have it towed to a shop because I have no time right now with school and work to break her apart. Shop just called and said that I stripped all the teeth off the the timing belt around the crank pulley. I have a brand new motor (10k miles)! Anyone know what would cause that minus a defective belt?

Well I can't say specifics on oil pressure at the head, but from the sending unit, it has never been high or low. It has been one of the few things that have never given me problems. It was an oem belt. I bout a reman 7 bolt long bock from a place called CarKing in Ontario California. Just a stock reman with b/s removed and I threw on a cometic h/g.

sounds like the engine seized which caused the belt to strip do to a sudden stop of the belt. i bet the belt is just a after the fact problum due to something that seized in the engine. the same thing happen to me when i spun a rod and main bearing and seized the engine, my timing belt broke becasue of the sudden stop of the crank.

I called and they said that he wiggled the crank and both the cams just to see if everything was free. All was good. He is going to do a compression check once he is able to get everything rotating again.

hopefully no bent valves or anything like that casue when you have problums with the timeing belt it can casue major thing to happen.... but sounds like your all good though hopefully it is just a beltt... good luck

I don't think that I have ever heard of anything good coming from a broken t-belt. Its usually more like saying, "Crap the condom broke!" Neither of the two have happy endings!

I highly doubt anything siezed. You would have heard it before hand. You're sure the balance shafts are removed?

Same thing happened to me, slowing down for a light. Got lucky and only bent 4 valves. Highly unlikely that all of the valves survived.

As if those links can't break and do the same damage. It comes down to, how well are you going to take care of you car/engine. Not saying the OP didnt take care of his, but that usually happens to someone whose 100000 miles out of a timing belt change and forgot to change their oil this year.

Unlike the timing belt the timing chain system has way more problems than a belt. Over time a belt will where out but in the domestic cars the timing chain can snap a link, and better yet the chain will wear the teeth on the gears down over time and jump time, causing you to not only replace the chain but also the gears belts are more efficient and more reliable.

Hopefully there are no bent valves. usually thats the case when a timing belt rips up like that.....in my case, thats why my I'm working on my laser right now. Change your timing belt and the balance belt......or face the consiquences.

from my 2 experiences with timing belts jumping time or snapping the vavles r usally bad maybe not in all cases but in my the vales were bad. In my 90 gst the timing belt only jumped like 2 or 3 teeth and the whole intake side was bad. In my other experience (my 93 gs) the belt was snapped and i still have a valve that looks like a s turn so, you got to remember our engines r interference engines so time belt problems lead to cylinders meeting valves and thats a very bad thing, or at least in my cases.
