Columbus,
I found this FAQ thread: http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127313

I have done a lot of searching but haven't found any answers. Has anyone been able to measure the weight of a factory windshield and rear window on a 2g? Even if its a 1g, I would appreciate the datapoint as I haven't seen that either.

When my windshield was being replaced, I begged the guy to let me weigh it. After a bunch of BS about 'my insurance won't let me,' he finally agreed to stand on my bathroom scale for a moment and later to be weighed holding nothing. The difference was between 85 and 90 pounds, but I would take this value with lots of salt, since it was fast, he was being a jerk, and it was a cheap bathroom scale.

I have no idea about the rear window. If the glass is as thick as the front (which seems doubtful, but you never know), then it could be well over 100 pounds.

ps. I like that you posted this under handling (and I'm not being sarcastic); getting rid of weight up high can be really beneficial. When I dumped my ego, I gained a quarter second on a second-second course. ;)

I posted it in handling because I didn't honestly see any other place to put it :)

As much as I'd love to believe a windshield weighs 85 pounds, there's no way it can be close to that. A 1/8" thick Lexan sheet, based on the dimensions on a 2g windshield, should weigh around 10.5 pounds. They usually advertise a 50-75% weight svaings depending on what thickness you choose but it can vary widely amoungst models. I was hopeful that the factory windshield would weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-45 pounds but I really have no exact idea.

According to one of the better vendors for lexan, the stock windshield on an F-body weighs 100#, so it doesn't seem that far off to say ours could be 85-90#, but, then again, I'm basing this on assumptions and admittedly lousy data, so maybe the entire shaker of salt is called for.

Please post here again if you discover the truth.

Here's where I'm getting most of my numbers from. Check it out. According to it, the total factory glass of an 01 Camaro weighs 96 pounds.

I was thinking of an older F-body. Maybe I'm way off or maybe F-body windshields have gotten lighter. If they have gotten lighter, then maybe my estimate of a 2G windshield is off, as well. I can well believe this, since, after we got through arguing about insurance, we spent the next half-an-hour swatting eavesdropping flies before he agreed to be weighed without the windshield. The guy might have burned off a few calories jumping around and slapping at insects, which would throw my estimate high. ;)

Out of curiosity, how thin are you allowed to go for drag-racing? In my world, front windshields must be a 1/4" and the rest can be 1/8".

The other windows besides the windshield can be .093". The windshield must be at least 1/8". If you do 1/8", you need a centering strip as well do to it being pretty flimsy. This place offers 3/16 and 1/4" as well but I'm doing the 1/8".

FWIW, I recall lifting my '73 F-body windshield with one hand easily. I can't imagine it's 100 lbs...but that was 15 years ago too.

The car I was thinking of was a '85. But I probably should just bail on this thread due to lack of good data.

Just go to the junkyard and pull the windows, take a scale.. and weigh them. That way it will be 100% accurate. You don't even hafto buy it just lay it all in the car or something then.. That is, If you're that worried about the weight.

That's surprising. I have always assumed that if the windshield breaks on a Yugo, the owner just replaces the whole car. ;)

Simple question, Is there a link to the weight of all the stock parts on a dsm? The link I found from prostreetonline.com is down, Anyone have anywhere else? I've searched 10 pages of topics and then gave up. I already weight reducted 135lbs that I know of, And alot more if I find the weight link..

Thanks alot.

To help people out you should weigh everything you've pulled thats not on the list and post it. I know theres a lot of guys(myself included) who are trying to build lightweight cars. I screwed up by selling all my old parts without weighing them first-thanks in advance.

There is also more but I can't really think right now, I'm at work. As I think of more stuff I removed, I will add it.

Suprisingly, It still looks really good imo. I'm in the process of cleaning up the rest of the floor and painting the complete floor and everything gloss black.

I know there is more I removed, Like I said.. I'll post it when it comes to mind.

Don't anyone post how dumb it is to ''weight reduct'' I really don't care what anyone thinks about it. I don't use any of anything I took out, Anyway.

Man, your car and mine should look about the same inside.

If you are just going to drag it, or not drive it in any cold or rainy conditions remove the enitre heating system. That is alot of weight right there. It sucks if you get caught in the rain though, because with no defrost the window fogs up, and you have to keep the windows down(bad experience).

I actually removed both drivers side and passenger side heating ducts for the floor but I don't want to mess anything up with the rest of the heating system. Since I drive the car when i'm not doing stuff to it. I noticed under the passenger side dash there is a huge black black, I think that's with the heating? It is round and rectangle(Not sure the shape it would be called.) It looks pretty heavy. I guess we'll see if all this weight removal helped at all. Last time I went to the track I ran a 13.0 my first time ever racing, With none of this removed, And now I added a ported 16g and injectors and safc also. So once I get it dialed in and put back together, I plan on going again.

That is the evaporator, blower, and right behind the radio is your heater core. You should see how much room you have under the dash after all of that is gone. Its crazy.

Aint that the truth, removed all my AC and heat and duct work, even the metal brakcets under the dash that the dash itself bolted to. Then just a few strips of 1/8" by 1" aluminum and made some new ones. I am getting a carbon fiber sunroof plug made so I can get rid of the track, sunroof, headliner, controls and wiring. I kept the plastic panels, but used minimum hardware to hold them all on. No stereo speakers, amp, wiring ect. Then I used a drill and drilled out the welds for the bracket that holds the spare tire down. I even removed the spoiler. The car is going to be a engine 2 seats, chassis and plastic panels. I wanted the car to look normal to the average driver playing catch up till it was too late. I think the roll cage is going to be the hardest thing to hide. Its going to be a very tight fit to keep it conciled.

A good weight saving (if you have a free jump start service incase you need it) or rarely drive your car (my case) is a odyssey battery, they make a pc680. weights 14lbs, and is small enough it can be put anywehere. I am making a bracket to hold it under the stock air fileter location to help put the weight foward on the FWD. put I have seen them placed under where the stock battery usually goes against that front member.

Alot of people really like this battery and I have only seen one die (think I have 5 local friends running this battery), but its better to be safe and make sure you have a roadside service. Never know if your going to need it. They even make a PC 545 that weights 11 lbs, but I have not heard of anyone running this one yet.
