stock fuel pump question

Just wanted to double check my thinking before doing this to make sure im correct.

I am using an external fuel pump on a jmf fuel cell and want to use the stock level sender.

Can i simply cut the black with white stripe wire and cap it to eliminate power to the stock pump? Or will this also eliminate power to the level sensor.

Black wire with a white stripe is the 12V supply wire to the pump. The solid black is ground. The low level light should turn on when that wire is grounded. -VFAQ

PS. Make sure you use a multimeter When you test. You don't need a fire in your back seat!
