How many of you have had a cop ask you to pop your hood and you did not have a stock a turbo? If so, did you get away with it? etc.... I got my TD06 20g in now and it does not look like it belongs there. Since noticing this I sorta wish I would have got a different turbo. Lol. oh well.

You just have to be civil when you are behind the wheel in town.
We have cops up here that have busted even a new STi, but I bet he drives like a jackass...

By all means though, groove an on ramp with authority when getting on the freeway.

put the heat shieldds back on after installing the 20g and it looks like a t-28...end of story

Wow, its back. Well, I got my 20g in and it doesn't look stock. You could tell that it came from another car. That was a bad move on my part. I am planning on either a FP Big T28 or a Greddy 18g turbo upgrade. That is the only thing that make sense. I also just found out after getting my 2nd greddy 24v i/c that ithey are not c.a.r.b legal, only the 18r kit is. So, I plan to get a good SMIC that can support either turbo I choose. I am not sure what to get turbo wise. I should have asked better questions in my first post than I did. The only other turbos I could think of that just might pass of a stock(ish) would be the 2g20g or 2g16g that are hard to find that are sold.

Either way, to me its just not worth it to risk getting tickets or failing smog inspections and driving on eggshells.

Feel free to voice your opinions and let me know of your experiences. It just sucks when you have to swallow your own words on a thread that you started. peace!

That's weird.

Well, heres the deal on the 20g. I spoke to Roadraceengineering yesterday and the said that the 20g with a 90degree elbow welded on will most likely pass the emissions and visual test. Apperrantly the smog techs look in their computer to see that the car is turbocharged and see the layout and basic design of the turbo and go from there. And from what I have seen on the factory exploded parts breakdown the 20g could in fact fool the smog techs into thinking it is the stock turbo.

Now, the hard part is finding a way for the greddy intercooler the make it through the inspection. RRE suggested that I paint my intercooler black and do the same for my intercooler pipes. So, things may not look as bad for us Cali guys as I thought it would.

But, just a side not on this. The only FMIC that you could legally get away with is the Greddy 18r intercooler, since it is the only one that comes with a c.a.r.b. sticker.

Well, I've been running the car at 10psi due to lack of fuel mods.
I just started her up yesterday after a T-Belt, BSE, full Prothane suspension kit, full prothane motor mount kit, 2.5" O2 Housing, Megan DP and an AFPR.

I will get the exhaust done and an alignment next weekend, then DSMLink and my Denso 720's are going in.

I hope I can tune her to about 18-20psi on 91 (fingers x'd).

So, I will be in a better position to answer your question in the next couple of weeks.

The 16g, 20g, t28 and all the relatively smaller turbos will not cause you to NOT pass sniffer emissions. Neither will a FMIC or any other intercooler part for that matter.

As for visuals, you live in SoCal. Clear out a day and try a bunch of shops around East LA (San Pedro exit off the 10 freeway) and you'll very likely find someone who won't give a damn about visual within your first 2 smogs.

If its mandated that you have to go to a test-only center now though.. then I guess that's not an option.

I go to school down here in LA and just passed visual and emissions with flying colors about a week ago. I have a FMIC, big red UICP, FIPK with no carb sticker and a bunch of other colorful stuff under my hood. I'm not giving out the shop name for obvious reasons but just look around. 99.9% of shops won't call to tell on you... you just got REAL unlucky.

Good luck.
