Well... a little while ago i ahd a local shop attempt to install my Alpine X100 in my 95 GSX. I had previously tested the unit before on a battery and all worked fine. He wired it all in and the unit would not power up. He tested the essential wires with a multimeter and all seemed fine. So he said the unit is probably defective, he even tried benchtesting it and it wouldnt power it on. So i sent it to alpine and now its back. They said the unit is just fine accfording to the service record. So now i tried to plug it in today and still nothing. what the hell? Any ideas?

just took a meter straight to the harness, the red,and yellow wires have current going to them. Just noticed something, my voltmeter is only reading 11 volts, could this cause the unit not to power up?

turned the car on, it was at 13 volts and i tested the power to the harness and still NOTHING. OMG.. what the hell is going on?

Unfortunately I'm not too savy with these types of issues, but I'd recommend going to another car audio shop and seeing if they can get the unit to work doing their bench test. If it still fails I'd see if they'd let you test a different head unit they have on hand to ensure your car is not at fault and go from there.

ya i have that too. i dont think it prevents me from doing this though.

You might be right about the 11 volts not allowing the stereo to work. But it should atleast flicker maybe at that voltage. Make sure you have the wires connected right, Red to red, Yellow to Yellow, and make sure you have a ground! My 98 GS didn't have a ground, the stock stereo was grounded via the antena wire. So I drilled my own to the frame. I would take it to another shop, one that actually knows what a car stereo is. Also check ALL fuses. At minimum you should get power. Some of the higher end cars have an amplifier and if you install a stereo, your tweeters or speakers period will not work. I had this issue with my 98 GS. I installed an aftermarket stereo, An Alpine! Unit powered on and did not put out sound. I checked the amp fuse, it was fine. Did a bunch of research to find out that I might be screwed and might have to install a 4 channel amp under the seat in its replacement. So I did that, ran RCA's and connected the wires directly to where they come out, under the pass seat. And the sound rocked! Remember the twisted wires are the speaker wires. Two wires a speaker.

check your ground. ground somewhere on the chassis. weird how it only reads 11v. does your battery read 12v? if you are desperate to see that it turns on, bring the deck by the battery and connect it, if it turns on there, then you got some weird thing going on with the wiring behind the radio..

Just run a switched and constant power wire directly from the fuse box. Remember to fuse them. Ground it to a solid grounding point and your done. Going directly from the fuse box will bypass any faulty or poor wiring at the harness. If it still doesn't power up..........it's the head unit. Also, just to be sure, make sure the antenna is hooked up.

Take what broads72 said and throw it out. No offence. But thats first off to hard to do without alot of time, to do right. I'm sick and tired of cars coming in that has crap like this hacked and tapped. If you wanted to run new wires, wires you know that work. You can do a quick 2 wire tap on your ignition harness since its guarented to work. The wires you would tap are White for constant 12v, and Blue/Black for the Acc. Wire. You don't want to run anything to the fuse box because, well like I said earlier if you had tons of time to do it right, go ahead. You will have to pull the fuse box out enough to get to the back of the wires.

I've been an Electronics Installer for 8 years now. You hack and tap the fuse box your asking for your wires to catch on fire, fused or not.

What you need to do is continue doing what everyone else including me is saying and test wires. Test your battery with the car not running, if its steady around 12+volts and the power wires for the stereo is 11.0 or around there, you might have a bad fuse thats about to give and is limiting connection. There are 3 wires you need to worry about, 12V Constant, 12V Accessory, and GND! So focus on those. Do what red says also and test the stereo directly at the battery.

A stereo should work at eleven volts. Aftermarket stereos in DSMs must have a ground wire to the chassis installed. Use a harness adapter instead of cutting any wiring.

And only post ONE damned thread.

No offense taken Infinite. I was talking about just to test, not as a permanent solution. Although I can guarantee that there will be more of a hackjob done if someone who doesn't know what they are doing tries to tap into the power wire at the steering column versus do what I suggested. I can only imagine how that would turn out.

Has this problem been rectified?
