Starting up

Hi guys im having a little trouble. When i start my 99 Eclipse GS it seems like the engine is stuttering so i give it a little rev and black smoke comes out and smells like gas. How could i fix this problem. Also when its cold out, is the shifter and clutch supposed to be stiff?? Thanks

The first is a flooding condition. Could be caused by caked air filter, ECT at full -40. That's the Electronic Coolant Temp Sensor. Could have a bad injector o-ring or bad injector. Your MAP sensor could be bad. All of these would cause that. I highly suggest getting a computer scan to see what codes pop up. Then you can address the item that shows up in the code. It could also be multiple items causing the same thing. Just be aware of that fact.

Replace your trans fluid with either BG Synchromesh or you could do like I did and switch to Mobil One full synthetic engine oil. 15-50 or something like that. Made my shifting easier and stopped jumping out of reverse.

Either one will work great. There's other Synchromesh fluids out there so it boils down to your personal taste.

Hmmm, I might have to try that. My car is picky when it comes to trans fluid. Maybe she'll like that...............How long have you been using that?

Another thing I forgot to mention that might narrow it down is when im going around a corner in 2nd at low rmps my exhaust pops and i feel less performance for that split second.

Mine too. It doesn't seem to do much better on the syncromesh. No shit on 15 50 Mobil 1?

Everything Old Mitsu Tech said is right on (as usual). The only other thing I can think of is you might have an exhaust leak thrown into the mix there, as well.
Just something else to look into.
