I got the starter working but it will only turn over for about 1/32 of a second before it makes a very bad noise. We tried to turn the motor over by using a rachet and spinging the crank pulley. It would only go so far before we just could not turn it. So something is binding up or catching. Sadly i have to pull the tranny back off...and more than likely waste four more months trying to get the damn thing back together...Would anyone have any ideas on what i am looking for?

Lets look at what you've changed from when it was running.
Machined flywheel;did everything look the same gonig on. As far as diameter and clearance? They could have give you back the wrong one?

You replaced the transmission; did it turn freely before you put it on, or did you check? OMG Is it stuck in gear? Is there a gap between engine/trans that you didn't see? Did the clutch go together ok, and did the splines feel ok?
you've tried two starters; same results with both?

yes it looked the same going back on
No way they could have given me back the wrong one
It turned freely, and OF COURSE i checked.
Its in netural
No gap at all
The clutch went together fine, the transmission slid on the flywheel just fine
Well the starter has nothing to do with the motor binding up.

Well that covers pretty much everything. So the only logical explanation in my opinion is the trans is stopping the engine from rotating. So I would reverse the process until it frees up. Without even completely removing it, separating them a little you might find something you didn't before.

Well someone said to back the bolts out just a little bit and try it again. I might as well give it a try. Its not like i have anything to lose.

Bellhousing bolts I asume. Thats what I was thinking. Even taking them out, to separate just enough you know?

ok i was thinking about some things, when i try to start the car it makes a metal sound. Someone asked me if the timing was off but i did not do anything to the timing, except when i was trying to get the flywheel bolts off i put a breaker bar on the crank center bolt and when i was trying to break the flywheel bolts loose it loosend up the crank center bolt. Would that have caused the car to go out of time and make the valves hit? I just want to know because i am making a list of things i need to check tonight and tomorrow when i get all of this done
